Campus shooting
Edited on Wed May-11-11 05:42 PM by MyrnaLoy
Police are investigating a deadly shooting at San Jose State University. Campus police say the shooting happened Tuesday night in a university parking garage. Three people died, including the suspected gunman. Police believe the victims knew each other and say the incident was not random.

14. lets unban them!!!
This is the first such incident at the school, according to the story.

The only way to make sure there isn't another incident like this is to arm all the students...possibly give them cowboy hats and ponies too just to be on the safe side.

16. I think there's a rational middle ground...
...given that the "Gun Free Zone" system has been an abysmal failure, it's clear a change is in order. But I think we can do without the ponies, and most will opt out of the hats as well if my guess is correct.

32. I have not. I'm sure Virginia Tech was thought to be a safe campus, as well.
These things can happen anywhere, and short of running colleges like medium-security prisons, incidents like these will continue

to happen occasionally.

39. Odd, Utah has had this for several years.
I was just up there again (frequently for family and vacation time) a few weeks ago, and when I went through the UofU, I didn't see anyone pacing the common areas, fingering their ivory handled Colts.

Maybe they only do it at noon.... high, that is...

2. Without any more info, I'll go out on a limb and say at least
one of these people wasn't a student, and at least one had a criminal record. I'll go further and guess it had nothing to do with on-campus activity and was some sort of personal feud involving drugs.

I may be wrong, but we'll see.

While you would usually be right, since most homicides are committed by people with extensive criminal histories, this does not seem to be the case here. None of the victims had prior criminal records.

It sounds like a love triangle gone bad.

33. It should be...BUT..
Some people continue to insist that the best way to stay safe in public places, is to have "Gun Free" zones.

They have been an abstract failure. Because gun free, they certainly are not.

I don't think a sign,has ever stopped a mass shooting.

10. So, what is the point here?
Is this somehow an argument that students of legal age to carry shouldn't be allowed to? Or that they should? Was the shooter a legal gun owner/carrier prior to his act?

There really does not seem to be enough info yet to make any sort of conclusions, or even suggestions.

23. "Case closed"? There's hardly ANY information been made public!
We don't know the ages of the persons involved, whether they were students, the sex of the two victims, whether the shooter had a CCW permit (highly unlikely in Santa Clara Co., I might note). We know hardly anything. So what the fuck do you mean, "case closed"?

53. Well, the O.P. has pretty consistently presented an anti-carry stance.
It would only help her position if the shooter was a legal carrier.

If the shooter was an illegal carrier, it certainly wouldn't be helpful to her position.

22. Without more information, it's hard to draw any conclusions
We don't know the identities of the victims and the shooter, their relationships to each other, why they were there at that hour. We only know what the police have said they believe not to be the case, but that leaves a rather wide field of possibilities (including the possibility that the police may turn out to be wrong).
