Columbia Falls (republican moran) lawmaker wants guns allowed on school property (Montana)
http://www.kpax.com/news/columbia-falls-lawmaker-wants-guns-allowed-on-school-property/

olumbia Falls lawmaker Jerry O'Neil is sponsoring a bill that would give students the right to have a hunting rifle stored in their car on school property.

The Republican first addressed this idea after a Columbia Falls student was expelled for just such an instance and he will present information Friday on his bill.

O'Neil says House Bill 558 goes before the House Education Committee to clarify language in state law regarding firearms on school property.

"If this board desires, I do have a bill draft request, that's mine so far, it's unused, I'd be glad to help you make the Montana Law more clear, in order to allow a rifle in a locked trunk, to be on a school parking lot."

2. Yeah -no significant incidents like Columbine and Heath High School Kentucky
http://articles.cnn.com/1997-12-01/us/9712_01_school.shooting.folo_1_kentucky-school-heath-high-school-students?_s=PM:US

The boy, a freshman at Heath High School where the shooting occurred, was taken into custody. His name was not immediately available.

A motive also was unclear but parents who rushed to the school said the boy had made threats in the past. Principal Bill Bond said the gunman apparently had been warning other students of something big happening since Friday.

Ben Heady, a student, said the shooter had been watching the prayer group for several days.

The youth, wearing ear plugs, pulled out a .22caliber Lugar handgun at about 745 a.m., just before the start of classes, said Bond.

8. How exactly did the current law prevent Columbine?
What law would have prevented such an attack?

4. Sounds like the exact kind of place that the federal exception was designed for
"Montana statute is less flexible than the federal law that inspired it and under the federal Gun Free Schools Act, there is an exception for firearms kept in a locked car on school property. But, no such exemption exists in Montana."

I don't see any legitimate reason for opposing this bill - it seems that all the current law does is criminalize student hunters who are otherwise behaving in a reasonable and legal manner. I wonder if the original drafters of the MT law just slipped up and forgot about hunters...

5. I disagree with this proposal.
I don't think children need to be toting firearms around in their vehicles.

6. OMG a rifle in a locked trunk? Do you know how many people have been killed
by those things?

Zero. But pretend it's a much larger number instead and bet outraged.
