Dear Senator Bennett
As you know, Representative Carolyn McCarthy has proposed a bill limiting the size of ammunition magazines to 10 rounds (HR 308). This legislation would effectively ban the most common standard magazines on the civilian market today.
As you may be aware Ms. McCarthy is disingenuously claiming that her bill would ban “high capacity” magazines while it would, in fact, ban standard factory magazines for most hand guns available in America today.
I would also like to take a minute to remind you that these “extended” (greater than factory standard”) magazines such as Jared Loughner used in Arizona are almost never used by criminals in America and are most frequently used by sport shooters who do not wish to spend time at the range reloading their practice ammunition.
As demonstrated during the Clinton “Assault Weapon Ban” banning such magazines would have little if any effect on crime.
I would like to encourage you to work vigorously against this bill, and against any other bill that would compromise the ability of law abiding citizens to exercise their constitutional rights under the second amendment.
In closing let me assure you that I will be monitoring your voting record with regard to this issue closely. Should you choose to sponsor, cosponsor, support or vote in favor of any legislation that restricts the second amendment rights of law abiding citizens you will lose my vote permanently.
Thank you very much for your consideration.
Mr. Bennett's Response(Lotta words little substance)
Dear Mr. Sillsbee:
Thank you for contacting me regarding the devastating shooting of Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. I appreciate hearing from you.
On January 8, 2011, Rep. Giffords was one of 19 victims of a tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona. Six of those victims, including a federal judge and a child, lost their lives as a result of the shooting. This type of senseless violence has no place in our nation.
In the hours, days, and weeks since the shooting, we have all tried to understand how such a horrific act could happen. We must allow federal and local law enforcement officials to complete their investigations in order to pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law. At the same time, we as a society must be very careful with how we characterize this event. We must not jump to conclusions or use this event to further a political agenda.
As we reflect and move forward from the events of that fateful Saturday morning, there are a number of important and valid topics to address, from our country’s mental health care services to the state of political speech in the country to the laws that govern our constitutional right to bear arms. It is my hope that we find constructive ways to make the country better in the long run. And of course our focus right now must also remain upon the recovery of those who were injured and on consoling the families of those who lost loved ones.
I value the input of fellow Coloradans in considering the wide variety of important issues and legislative initiatives that come before the Senate. I hope you will continue to inform me of your thoughts and concerns.
