WH Advisor David Plouffe Confirms Obama Will Address Gun Control At A Later Date
White House senior advisor David Plouffe appeared with Brian Williams on NBC after the State of the Union and made more news with what was left out of the speech than with what was included in it. Responding to criticism that President Obama did not include any mention of gun control in the speech, Plouffe confirmed earlier indications that Obama will address guns separately, at a later time.

Plouffe suggested that the State of the Union address needed to focus on the economy, however soon the President will tackle the gun issue. He did mention that the President supports reinstating the ban on assault weapons, but gave no further indication if any other gun control measures might be sought. “It’s a very important issue and I know there’s going to be a lot of debate on the Hill,” Plouffe predicted.

Oh f*ck. Leave it alone if you want to be in the WH in 2013!

1. It's the third rail.
I was watching tonight specifically to see if there would be mention of gun control. He had the perfect segue to do it, and he didn't. I don't think he's going to touch gun control until his second term.

3. And if he touches it before the election
He will only ensure he will continue to have Repukes controlling the House and very possibly the Senate. For instance in my state of PA Casey will be up for re-election & this will be a very big issue. May be why Toomey very narrowly defeated Sestak, didn't help Sestak was for AWB. Outside of Philly and city limits of Pittsburgh this state is very gun rights.

4. To paraphrase my Lover Boy
If you pull the trigger on wanting gun control and all you here is a "click" the fastest way to clear the jam is to look down the barrel.

5. i still doubt its going to be that big
he may mention it in a press conference but i don't see him pushing it like healthcare. Too much political capital will be spent with a high probability of failure

6. He'll be a one term President.......
Save this post, because this "confirmation" will be used over and over again during the coming campaign.

Gun control is a HUGE swing issue with the independent voting block in almost every state.

It most certainly will effect several key swing ("battleground")states such as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Florida, West Virginia, Missouri, Ohio, Arkansas, and Tennessee.

Any further talk of this from the administration will truly be the final nail in the 2012 coffin.

7. it depends
what gun control does he push? He might push for schumer's bill which would require the army to report drug use to NICS. I think he will give support to mccarthy's bill but probably won't push it too hard- he knows that bill isnt going to pass.

8. If he is to push anything I'd say
Push to get your ATF director appointed. Push to make all gun purchases have to go through NICS. Push to make sure mentally ill cannot purchase guns. Invite the Republicans, gun makers & sellers & the NRA and other gun groups like say the NSSF(National Sports Shooting Federation) to come in and work with you.

Stay the hell away from any talk magazine limits and AWB ban! They were only feel good measures on the Dems part and added fuel & money for Repub candidates.

9. That would be the smart move
He should realize that he is not going to get mccarthy's bill passed- and if for some reason hell froze over and it did pass- it would have so many pro-gun amendments signing would look like a loss more than a victory. The votes just arent there. Over 250 A rated house members, and close to 50 A rated senators. You arent going to get anything "clean" passed. Not to mention you have harry reid in charge of the senate- who is no friend to gun control and is not going to put much pressure on the chamber to move the bill

10. Choosing an ATF director that wasn't so closely associated with the gun control lobby

and didn't have such a history of playing media games would be beneficial, I think. I'm afraid the current pick is going to be a lightning rod.

11. If he does not address gun control in his first term, after having said that he
would address it at a later date, will be taken as a direct threat that he will address gun control very aggressively in his second term. If the democrats don't want to lose the white house they need to drop the AWB and gun control from their agenda.
