The shows over...whattaya got to say about John Stossel?
I felt his interview with the felons was powerfull.
No law, no fucking law that you ever pass is going to stop guys like them from getting guns. The only ones who will be affected by any gun laws are the average everyday people like those that post here.

...to have a lower opinion of that scumbag bastard, John Stossel. He was great as a consumer reporter on WCBS-TV in New York in the '70s and '80s.

Today, he sucks.

(Edited to fix typo.)

5. Imagine that
he's still a lying right wing scumbag.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=675869

What's next from the RKBA crowd? Ann Coulter on guns? Rush Limbaugh on guns?

It could even be David Duke on guns, since he's "gun rights" all the way.

7. Wasn't part of the piece
blasting Republicans as hypocritical for increasing the federal deficit and increasing the size of government?

4. Felons...
Edited on Sat Jan-24-04 03:19 AM by beevul
"But guess what? The Centers for Disease Control recently completed a review of studies of various types of gun control: background checks, waiting periods, bans on certain guns and ammunition. It could not
document that these rules have reduced violent crime. The government wants to say things like the Brady Gun Control Law are making a difference, but they aren't. Some maximum security felons I spoke to in New Jersey scoffed at measures like the Brady law. They said they'll have no trouble getting guns if they want them."

"A Justice Department study confirmed what the prisoners said. But get this: the felons say that the thing they fear the most is not the police, not time in prison, but, you, another American who might be armed."

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/2020/2020/myths_john_stossel_040123.html

(note: the above appears to be a summary, there was alot more than the above on the program.)

The vid of the prisoners talking was telling. "Some maximum security felons I spoke to in New Jersey scoffed at measures like the Brady law." Imagine that - criminals scoffing at laws. :eyes:

I also question the accuracy of the 700,000 figure for defensive gun uses.(Not seen in the above summary but WAS in the program)

DDT is safe....yeah right.:eyes: Stossel can explain it to the birds. I don't think I will ever believe DDT can be safe, no matter how its used.

On edit: I had the privelage of growing up verry near where Raptor Resource Project Director Bob Anderson was raising Peregrine falcons in the 80's. I went to school with his son Geremy. I spent more than just a few hours at his place. I have a verry soft spot for Peregrine falcons.

6. A liberal blogger sums it up...
"Only in America could someone like John Stossel have a regular pulpit on primetime network tv and write a book entitled Give Me a Break: How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media and get a primetime network special and do it all with a straight face."

9. Any rebuttals to the actual content of the segment?
Or is it something we can all agree with?

Pretty plain and simple, criminals do not follow gun laws and are afraid of home owners with guns.

11. John Stossel is synonymous with journalistic dishonesty
and was before he ever got near the gun issue...

No surprise he's peddling gun rights propaganda...if it weren't for denial, distortion and outright deception, there'd be no RKBA movement at all....

I heard last week that they want to ban smoking in prison in California, so I guess it would have to be allowed now. Talk about cruel and unusual punishment though.

13. Another bit of Stossel dishonesty
from the OTHER Roger Ailes...

"John "Smackdown" Stossel's latest ABC propaganda fest, concerning "Popularly Reported Misconceptions," contained slams on the Democratic Party. According to ABC's web summary of the piece, Stossel claimed: "We've all heard this one during the presidential campaign. When it comes to income taxes, the Democratic presidential candidates keep telling us, the rich don't pay enough."

The program featured, in the role of putative expert, "Steve Moore," who was identified as "co-author of Things are Getting Better All The Time." (Dumbass actually got the title wrong.) Moore was not identified as the president of the right-wing Club for Growth, which ran those anti-Dean "left wing freak show" ads in Iowa."

19. same as always...
"boo hoo, he's a Bad Person, I'm covering my ears!"

The tactic used by defense lawyers for rapists is the same: ignore the truth and substance and instead seek to attack the person.

When argument fails, the anti-freedom crowd always goes after the messenger...

Edited on Wed Jan-28-04 02:13 PM by MrBenchley
why, if there were any truth or substance, a right wing crank synonymous with journalistic fraud would be the only one carrying it. Oh that's right there's lots of others doing so too....<sarcasm>fine journalists like Sean Hannity and Sun Myung Moon.</sarcasm>

"the anti-freedom crowd"
Yeah, the freedom to re-spout lies from right wing shills is a mighty freedom, all right. I bet if you looked, you could find an editorial on Newsmax that backs that up.

21. Behold, a right wing humhole speaks!
"ABC's Stossel: The Media Are Dominated by Leftists
John Stossel, who co-anchors 20/20 with Barbara Walters, has accused mainstream journalists, including those at ABC, his own network, of being leftists who view conservatives with hostility. Appearing at the libertarian Cato Institute to promote his new book, Give Me a Break, Stossel commented, "Where I live in Manhattan and where I work at ABC, people say conservative the way people say child molester." As reported by CNSNews.com, a unit of the conservative Media Research Center, Stossel told the group: "Leftist thinking is just the culture that I live in and the culture the reporters who populate the mainstream media live in." "

The Republicans chose Giordano, convicted of sexually preying on grade-school girls as the Connecticut resident most worthy of representing their party and state in the US Senate.
Richard A. Delgaudio, a harsh Clinton critic known as a Republican "Legal Affairs" leader recently escaped national media attention despite pleading guilty to child pornography. As the Washington Post reported:
Republican activist Richard A. Delgaudio, a longtime Northern Virginia-based fundraiser for conservative causes and personalities, was sentenced to two years' probation yesterday after pleading guilty to a child pornography charge."
