I attended oral arguments in Peruta v. San Diego County Monday morning.
Edited on Wed Nov-17-10 04:09 AM by jazzhound
Judge Irma Gonzalez will announce her decision in roughly three weeks. There is accurate description on what took place at the hearing on the CalGuns website:

Not surprisingly, the county counsel relied regularly on emotion-based argument and a couple of ludicrous claims. I agree with those who felt the attorney for the plaintiffs presented a strong case, and am currently feeling quite optimistic re. the outcome.

1. If you're optimistic, the nation is in trouble.

5. It's a variant on the War on (Some) Drugs mindset.
The "social control" model demands a certain approach, mainly that the control advocate is looking out for the best interests
of society against his deluded and/or corrupt opponents, who will surely bring on a new Dark Age if the controller's warnings
are not heeded.

The Old Testament-style denunciations of what the prohibitionist seeks to keep under control, combined with dire predictions
for the future are common markers for both drug prohibitionists and gun control advocates.

12. Well said.
You reminded me of something once said about illicit substances: that without prohibiting them, we couldn't have a modern industrial society. Problem was, the "illicit substances" were booze, and the guy who said it was Henry Ford.

4. Yeah, we might end up like Vermont. Or Iowa.
Now that I think of it- You've yet to explain why Vermont, with the laxest gun laws in North America, isn't
Somalia With Snow Tires.

I suspect it's because that damnned empirical evidence doesn't support a faith-based worldview...

7. Hahahahahaha! "...Somalia with Snow Tires."

I'd have probably picked "Somalia with Syrup", but really, who can be angry when they have real Maple Syrup?

8. "Somalia with Snow Tires"

Real good chance IMO that this will enter the DU Guns Forum lexicon, along with Gun Control Reality Distortion Field and other gems.

2. Post #203 on page 6 provides a strong recap of proceedings.

An absolutely classic moment occurred when the the plaintiffs attorney commented:

"If 5% of ducks shot back, nobody would go duck hunting."

Nearly the entire courtroom laughed -- including the judge.
