Boozman Drafts Bill to Protect Veterans' Gun Rights
Thursday Congressman Boozman filed legislation that would force a judge to declare someone incompetent, not the VA.

"The VA arbitrarily turns these folks over to the FBI, and then they yank their ability to have their Second Amendment rights," Boozman said. "So these individuals are not; just because you're having trouble with your finances doesn't mean you're incapable of owning a fire arm and going hunting and things like that, which are very, very important to many of these individuals."

Two points on this issue.

First, why couldn't a Democrat come up with this first?!

Second, I completely agree that "due process" should be used when considering suspending a persons' fundamental rights.

1. I'm sure the NRA will score the floor vote on this bill
And all members will have the chance to up their NRA score by voting for it.

And I bet you Obama signs it too.

2. The VA would be the source the judge uses right?
If a judge made a ruling on competency it would depend on testimony of a doctor I would guess and if the vet was being treated in a VA hospital that would mean the judge would rely on the VA to make a determination.

3. Underhanded
There have already been problems with the military's policy of mandatory PTSD counseling for all soldiers returning from a deployment. Omaha denied a Marine a permit based on his attendance at the mandated PTSD counsling.

There are those who consider all veterans potential terrorists. For them this is just a "good excuse" to slam members of the military.

4. Ugh. What a collection of proctologists' delights on that thread...
I note that those who spouted off the most tended to have the least knowledge of PTSD and the military.

6. Due process helps take the "guess" work out of denying rights.
