Call 911, The Police will protect you......NOT....
Podunk local cops wasted more than half an hour assessing the Connecticut home invasion and setting up a vehicle perimeter -- time the two attackers used to strangle the mother in her living room and set the fire that claimed the lives of the two girls upstairs, according to shocking testimony today.

1. Sometimes the 911 responders are the home invaders...
CHICAGO - An elderly man in the Woodlawn neighborhood shot a gun at firefighters because he thought they were breaking into his home.

It happened at 12:45 Wednesday morning on the 6300 block of South Rhodes Avenue.

Fire personnel visited the home for a well-being check because an emergency necklace or bracelet had activated.

Police say no one answered the door so they removed an air conditioning unit and tried to enter through the window.

That is when the 93-year-old man fired two shots at a firefighter.

No one was hit.

Police will not charge the man because he was frightened and thought they were burglars.

The man was not hurt but he is now in the hospital for a mental evaluation.

2. If the anti-2A'ers have their way, this will become all too common.
Such a tragedy for this family.

WINTER SPRINGS

It was about 2:30 Friday morning, and John Tabbutt thought he heard an intruder.

He got his .38-caliber revolver, saw a figure in the hallway and fired a shot.

But the person he shot was no intruder. It was Nancy Dinsmore, his live-in fiancée, the woman he was to marry today.

That is what Tabbutt told Winter Springs police Friday: He shot and killed the woman he loved by accident.

Dinsmore died on the hallway floor from a single gunshot wound to the chest, Winter Springs police Chief Kevin Brunelle

4. I love the chutzpah of the defense counsel
"But you had a bank manager calling, that Mrs. Petit was petrified?" pressed the defense lawyer -- who, in an attempt to diminish his client's culpability and save him from lethal injection, is working to establish that police shared in responsibility for the deaths.

Not. A. Chance.

First, it's well established in American jurisprudence that the police bear no liability--and thus no responsibility--for failing to intervene in an offense in progress, even if they fail to make so much a good-faith effort (which Cheshire PD did make, incidentally).

Second, the police's tardiness in way compelled the defendant to strangle Ms Hawke-Petit and set the house on fire, predictably resulting in the death of the two daughters.

And Jesus H. Christ, I would not want to be Dr. Petit. I can hardly begin to imagine what that poor bastard is going through. This is one of those cases where I am not principally opposed to imposing the death penalty (not that that helps Petit get his wife and children back).

9. Crap, I missed a rather important word
In my above post, the line should read:

"Second, the police's tardiness in no way compelled etc."
