Shooting of 3-year-old was accidental

Last Wednesday's shooting of a three-year-old has been ruled as accidental, according to the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department.

The department determined the shooting, located at 164 S. 18th Street in Kansas City, Kan., was accidental following an investigation.

"Detectives have determined that when the mother of the victim exited the vehicle, the victim climbed into the front seat and obtained possession of a small silver handgun," a statement from the department reads. "As the mother reached for the gun, the gun discharged striking the victim in the mouth."

While the shooting was ruled accidental, the Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office is investigating the case on its own to see if charges should be filed.
