Wow, I agree with Mayor Daley ...
but only on some of his ideas...

State Senate Approves Tough New Gun Measure
Measure Backed By Richard M. Daley Increases Unlawful Use Of A Weapon Penalties

The Illinois State Senate has approved a tougher new gun bill that was backed by Mayor Richard M. Daley.

The proposed law makes changes to the aggravated unlawful use of a weapon statute. It makes unlawful use of a weapon a non-probationable offense, and calls for one to three years in prison for any offender caught carrying a loaded weapon without a valid Firearm's Owner Identification Card.

"This law reduces the threat of gun violence by sending a clear message that serious offenders will be held accountable and will not be let off scot-free as many of them are today," Mayor Daley said in a news release.

But the mayor also pointed out that the new law "protects the rights of law-abiding citizens."

The state Senate approved the bill unanimously, according to published reports. It now goes to Gov. Pat Quinn.

Mayor Daley pointed out in his news release that last year, the Illinois General Assembly passed three "common sense gun law" proposals he supported.

One measure classified unlawful use of a weapon by a gang member a Class 2 felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Another increased penalties for shooting students on or near schools or public transit. A third established an interstate gun trafficking task force within the Illinois State Police.

Of course it's nice to pass laws but in order for them to have any effect, they have to be enforced. I suspect this is where Mayor Daley will fail.

Mayor Daley still has lots of ideas I disagree with.

Daley: Send gun industry lawsuit to World Court
April 27, 2010

Six years after the state Supreme Court dismissed his $433 million lawsuit against the gun industry, Mayor Daley today called for a change of venue — to the World Court normally reserved for disputes between nations and crimes against humanity.

Wrapping up the sixth annual Richard J. Daley Global Cities Forum, Daley convinced more than a dozen of his counterparts from around the world to approve a resolution urging "redress against the gun industry through the courts of the world" in The Hague.

"This is coming from international mayors. They're saying, 'We’re tired of your guns, America. ... We don't want those anymore because guns kill and injure people,' " Daley told a news conference at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

"If we ship over poison to a country, don’t you think we should be responsible for it? That’s what they’re saying: 'Be responsible for what you manufacture and sell in my country.' ... You have to think outside the box. You have to be about how you protect your people."

Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard Casauban noted that the Mexican government is waging a brutal war against drug cartels that get “85 percent” of their weapons from the United States.

"The U.S. government says, 'We cannot do a lot of things to stop this,'" Casauban said. "We should take actions with legal effects in order to stop this trade between the United States and Mexico."

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter acknowledged that using the World Court is a long-shot. But, he said “you never know until you try” and it’s worth a try to counter the political muscle and money of the National Rifle Association.

Given half a chance, Daley would love to be declared King of the United States not just Chicago.

1. He threatened to sue Indiana a few years ago
He really thinks he's an emperor!

A couple of years back, not long after Indiana passed their shall issue CCW laws, he decided that he'd hold Indiana responsible for the violence in Chicago. After all, those dangerous Hoosiers from Terre Haute were probably driving up to Englewood at night and shooting up the streets when no one was looking. What gang problem? Those neighborhoods vote for him. It couldn't be his massive under investment in law enforcement in the minority neighborhoods that suffer the most, right?

This is the same guy that had no problem annexing pretty much an entire village that abutted O'Hare and condemning all the homes and businesses to expand O'Hare, even after the airlines said they didn't want to invest in a larger airport.

He's laying off police and teachers, totally violating their union contracts, still giving out no bid big $$$ contracts for "beautification" and is still pissing away tax money on the McDonald suit, not to mention what will undoubtedly be an endless string of pointless appeals and onerous and expensive registration schemes.

Daley lives in a fantasy world (with 24/7 armed guards for all of his homes) where he believes his own press releases and thinks everyone has to listen to him and do what he says. But one thing is consistent year after year, if anything is wrong, it's somebody else's fault.

This guy needs a nice long vacation somewhere far, far away. Maybe he could personally plead his case at the Hague and stick around for a year or two until it gets on the docket.

2. This is rich
"This law reduces the threat of gun violence by sending a clear message that serious offenders will be held accountable and will not be let off scot-free as many of them are today," Mayor Daley said in a news release.

That will have the same effect as a cop yelling, "halt or I shall be forced to say halt again"

Like gangbangers are gonna be scared of this. They view time in the pen as a resume enhancer.

3. How much you wanna bet
that the majority of people who end up having to serve a "mandatory minimum sentance" for carrying still end up serving that time concurrently with time from other charges?

6. He actually identified one of the biggest problems in Chicago ...
There is no deterrent to illegally carrying a firearm if there is no punishment.

Actually I suspect that a person with no criminal record who decides to ignore the Chicago gun ban and get a firearm for home defense, will find himself in more trouble if the weapon is found than a gang member caught carrying on the street.

7. I would wager that depends a great extent
On ones ability and/or propensity to pay the fines. You can't get blood from a turnip , so turnips don't get picked on anywhere near as much as they should .

Hey Daley
