I just posted on The High Road that I am a progressive liberal and
I called on other leftists/Democrats/liberals ther to join the NRA. We should all do this. It was a very good organization at one time, and we should get enough voting members to at least affect the political climate of the NRA, it not take it over.

I hope some of you will go to THR and check for my post in their activism forum, and maybe respond.

I KNOW there are other liberals there, and I'm hoping I won't get buried in RW horseshit. but it has happened before....
(My name on gun sites is dogngun.)

thanks.

3. .usa is not nearly as heavily trafficked
And I had a post I felt was worthy of an alert, which is extremely rare for me over there, like, I never do that.

And I got no response from the mods, and last I checked it was still up. So I went back to .org because of the lack of posters, and the sheer number of old hands at .usa meant that any help I could give on .org would be more needed.

2. Hey Mark
keep us posted. After reading their stuff last election I can't bring myself to support them in any way. You may give me hope. I went on one site for a manufacture and got run off and I was trying to be nice and just point out other options. Talk about hard core ideologues.

4. Structurally, the NRA is not a democracy
Yes, members do vote for the board of directors, but its more or less just a bone they throw to the membership. The leadership has basically insulated themselves.

Not trying to discourage you, though. Just be prepared for the struggle you suggest undertaking. Read up on the experiences of Neal Knox in trying to keep the NRA leadership accountable to its members.

5. I was a member when it all went to hell. It USED to be a fine organization
and I hope some day it will be again. I really have little hope for a positive result there, mainly want a few people to realize democrats have guns and know how to shoot, and maybe have a few lurking Dems there come out of the closet.

Shakes the good ol' boys up a little.

6. How a bout the GOA group
Edited on Tue Apr-13-10 10:07 PM by white cloud
I have heard a lot of people left NRA and went to GOA. I left NRA 25 years ago and never looked back.

Are there any Democrat Out doors Hunting shooting forums. I am on several but they are sick with freepers.

8. There is an outdoor forum here - there seems to be little else.
there was a liberal firearms forum a year or so ago, but I haven't seen much of it lately - I will investigate it again to see if it is still around.

The RWers tend to overwhelm liberal sites with their garbage, which is why I would like to see more of us openly participate in "their" sites.

bad, either.

Edited on Wed Apr-14-10 05:39 PM by benEzra
that liberal is not synonymous with anti-gun, but we'll see how that goes. It looks like your thread is at least getting some people to think, though.

BTW, did you notice the guy who thought that the gun bans in other countries were the work of liberals? When the UK and Australian bans were the work of their respective Conservative parties...

believe that liberals own guns at all ("Maybe 10-20% of gun owhere are liberal".)and some refuse to believe I am a Democrat ("Maybe you are a libertarian.") whils some tell me that forum is not for politics -I guess not for Democrats, anyway. And I found one guy who states he is bound to be a republican because he is a veteran.(?)

Thanks for your contribution-maybe we woke one or 2 of them up for a minute or two.

I posted a similar "announcement" on another gun site last year, and got really angry responses, including a virus of some sort on my computer.
This response may be an improvement...

13. I have a feeling we're going to have to do this ourselves
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 09:40 AM by derby378
A lot of the people on many pro-RKBA sites are so set in their ways and bombarded by right-wing propaganda that they can't accept the idea of a liberal Democrat owning a gun.

The NRA has reached out to some Democratic candidates, which is good, but there is still a lot of work to be done over there.

Main thing is, we don't want the Brady Campaign dictating gun politics for the Democratic Party. We're not so sure we want the NRA doing it, either. So we have to band together and do the job on their own. Hell, the NRA had to start somewhere back in the day...

14. You are probably right - I see a lot of liberals and progressives who
are pro gun and are shooters, and we are not represented anywhere, especially by the Democratic Party...I guess we should start from scratch.
I will check your facebook site, too - thanks.

17. My First DU Post
I am very happy to have found DU. Like many of you I have tried to find a way to reconcile my politics and love of shooting/guns on other public forums, but I get so tired of the knee-jerk reactions I get from some of the wingnuts. You think The High Road is bad, try being an open liberal on AR15.com. Around election time I got some pretty nasty PMs calling me a traitor and even threatening me. Mods were grudgingly supportive, but I knew they really didn't give a rat's ass...

I love to shoot and collect guns. Even my wingnut friends say I'm the biggest gun fanatic they know, and that's saying something here in Las Vegas. But if guns became illegal for some reason I'd just move on to something else, not that I believe in a million years the gov't could actually grab every gun out there, especially mine. Surprisingly, I actually care very little for 2A issues. I'm more of a 1st amendment kind of guy. I've been to the NRA convention and SHOT show (for work), and I can tell you that if those people knew my politics I would be socially ostracized, maybe worse. As long as conservatives think it's OK for the tinfoil hat fringe to make thinly veiled threats against our government and try to intimidate those who disagree with them the main reason I will hold on to my guns is to protect my family from civil/political unrest brought on by those proud members of the NRA.

It's hard as hell to be political and be forced to spend most of your time surrounded by smug morons on the major gun forums. I'm very active on Sigforum, AR15.com, HKPro and Colt Forum. I keep a fairly low profile, except that my sig line on those forums is the same as it is here on DU. I try to steer clear of anything political, but thanks to someone on Nevadashooters.com calling DU a "terrorist" web site I am now a contributing member. Anything that pisses off those hardcore teabaggers can't be all that bad, right?
