WASHINGTON – A U.S. military doctor removed a live round of ammunition from the head of an Afghan soldier in an unusual and harrowing surgery.

Doctors say a 14.5 millimeter unexploded round — more than 2 inches long — was removed from the scalp of an Afghan National Army soldier at the Bagram Air Field hospital last month.

But apparently it does; High Explosive Incendiary, to be precise.

Mind you, given AP writers' usual performance on firearms-related matters, I wouldn't be in the least surprised if it turned out to be a non-HEI bullet (once the bullet has been separated from the cartridge case, and the propellant combusted, it's no longer a "round," which illustrates my point about AP writers), but the precautions were taken in case it was.
