Ooh! Pictures!
Ok- which one of these makes me an EEEEEVILLL pro-RKBA gun owner?

Feel free to vote

Are any of the "humanity" points I lose for the guns made up for by the fact that I've been working with kids in foster care and group homes for the past seven years? What about the fact that I donated to both my local NPR affiliate and DU? Or that sometimes, at the dog park, I pick up the poop from other dogs just to help out? Do I lose more because I speed sometimes, or gain them back because I'm scrupulous about going slowly through school zones?

Isn't painting gun owners as monsters getting passe yet? I know that it's only one part of my life. I part I think is important to protect, but still only a part.

I bet that I'm not the only gun owner out there who doesn't fit in the pigeon hole that we're so often crammed into.
I bet that the anti's won't care....cause we haz teh gunz!!

I'm sorry. I know that this is a great generalization of people I've pigeon holed with the term "anti," even though I complain about it being done to pro-gun folks. I'm not perfect. I'm just sick of people assuming they know something about gun owners- and thinking it's something bad, at that- simply because we're gun owners.

9. I don't really see defensiveness in the least.
Or at least not unwarranted defensiveness. He's illustrating a point that the picture many people in the anti-gun movement paint of your typical gun owner is not an accurate one in the least, and that we are just as human as they are. Basically, you're trying to say that because he thinks those people are wrong and wants to show them, he must feel guilty about his gun ownership, which simply makes no sense in the least.

10. Wow.
I promise, I had no intention of using my pup as a shield. The whole point of using pictures was, however, designed to make visual a point that pro-gun folks have been trying to explain in words for ages with no luck. The pictures of my girlfriend, my dog...they were just pictures of other interests that I have. They represent other sides of me than "the gun owner."

Would it have worked better for you if I'd just posted pics of other activities, and not gone for something "cute" or "soft" or however you see the pup pictures as being?

13. Ok.
I can appreciate that.

I think that range of pictures demonstrates sides other than "typical" guy stuff. I could have made it all pictures of bungee jumping and whitewater rafting and swimming with sharks and climbing things and riding elephants; but I thought it would have been cocky and a little overly formulaic.

I do take your point, though. And I'm glad Finn made you smile. He rocks!

I'm curious though, what makes you think guilt? What I meant to convey was that guns are just another part of my life- and are just another part of the lives of many owners- neither more nor less important than my girl, my dog, traveling, etc...

Many 'what I carry' kits in CCW forums include a cell phone, pepper spray, a pocket knife, CPR face shield, and of course a firearm.

Closest I've ever been to a predator as large as I am. Of course, I was the only tourist in the water with a knife, but it's not my element, so I was still at an enormous disadvantage, had the shark pressed the point. He didn't. He was apparently fat and happy, and just swam on by.

I lived in central Africa for three years as a child. I've been at arms length from crocs, hippos, zebras, lions, cheetas, elephants, mountain gorillas, gnu's, almost any variety of antelope/ungulate, buffalo, ostrich, rhino, giraffe, etc. I am blessed.

Edited on Mon Nov-23-09 10:49 PM by burrfoot
the ladder-style covers actually do just fine, for me anyway. If you haven't tried them, the "rungs" are raised just above the level of the teeth of the quad rail.

I took the grip pod off though. It's got a quick release and it's great to pop on if I'm sitting at the bench, but for standing I took some advice from a guy with loads more experience than me and now I just hold the mag well. (not the magazine)

Your doxie rocks, and so do kong toys!

:toast:

*Edit: I did have full rail covers at first, they're in the pic of the two rifles on the table at the range.*

40. Unless the ammo you're shooting
is marked corrosive, you should be alright shooting pretty much anything, and since the only corrosive stuff sold these days comes out of eastern Europe with old Soviet marking on it, you should be alright. Just remember to clean regularly and keep that sucker lubed up. Remember to stick with a bullet weight appropriate to your barrel twist.

42. Do I like it?
Given the ammo situation we have right now, Fiocchi was what I could get from...I think it was ammunitiontogo.com
I wanted to have some on hand in case it got even more scarce. It actually wasn't too bad a price, and I should have bought more- even reloads are over a dollar a round now; here in Sarasota, anyway.

As far as performance- haven't had any issues. I don't get to enjoy those multiple-100's-of-rounds-at-the-range-days anymore with these prices so I haven't really put it to an endurance test, but the short answer to your question is: I like it just fine. No guarantees, of course, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Especially if it's on sale.

For me, as an only child that was home a lot from school because of illness, my dog was very much my best friend. I think I reverted to 6th grade for a couple of minutes there and thought "trigger" could be a euphemism for something else, which she could certainly have control of.

In an alternate universe where I am not happily involved in a long term relationship, of course.

It's how you can be certain it's not a photo by Oleg Volk: he's very insistent on proper trigger discipline when he kits his hot female friends and neighbors out with hardware.

Though I note Putin has the same issue. Whenever I see a picture of some Russian politician, he doesn't know not to keep his finger off the damn trigger. I wonder if their soldiers are as bad (and I suspect they are).

60. hahahahah Thanks for...
reviving an old thread, guys! I'm not ashamed to admit that I enjoyed looking at the pictures again and laughed out loud at the Austin Powers reference.

:hi:

Euro- thanks for the compliment! I can't claim to have "built" the entire rifle; but I did buy it as a stripped lower with an LPK (from a local company called Anvil Arms- GREAT guys!), and Magpul goodies for the grip, ladder rail covers, and stock (and, now, for the BUS too!). The upper I got in one piece, didn't want to mess with headspacing, etc., on my first build. Did not want to see this: :nuke: :evilfrown:

Putting it together was a blast (no pun intended), real fun little project. Once she was up and running, I had the YHM forearm replaced with a lighter one from Daniel Defense, and a piston system from a company called PWS installed.

That last one was a little bit silly (given the amount that I shoot), but I like it. And with all that, it was still about $1500 cheaper than the LWRC I'd been drooling over for a year before I decided to put one together myself.

Here's the current setup (dropped the scope and grip pod, added MBUS). (note: the orange follower isn't visible in the pic, but the magazine is empty and the bolt is locked back)

63. All of those pictures made me smile
listening to the Bosstones doesn't hurt, though trying to figure out how I'm getting to drill is giving me a headache.

64. Vizsla's are the best!
Mine goes everywhere with me (just like my .45 Kimber Pro Carry II).
I wish I knew how to post a picture of her!

67. I'd have to agree!
Posting a picture isn't hard- I'll PM you.

Is the Pro Carry a short version? Every Kimber I've seen has been a beautiful thing.

65. Is that first photo Payne's Prairie?
It looks a lot like Payne's Prairie, just south of Gainesville, Fl.

66. It's a little further south, sylvi-
Myakka State Park just outside of Sarasota, FL.

You'd never know it, though, what with it being 37 degrees and raining out right now.

Oh well. Come summer I'll be wishing for this weather :)

68. I saw what you did there.

When it hits the fan, most antis would suggest your line of defense should start with the cell at the bottom.

72. Without the big toe,
it could be a picture lifted from anywhere. I find the toe lends a photo authenticity.

70. Actually, so would quite a few firearms instructors
I think we can all agree that there's nothing with wrong with saying a cell phone should be your first line of defense. It's asserting that ti should be only your only line of defense that's problematic.

73. Anyone who can flap their arms hard enough to hover like that
probably doesn't need a gun. :D

Seriously, that is one impressive jump. And you have a beautiful family. :yourock:

I'll take this opportunity to throw in a gratuitious pic of my son here...

...just because he's uber cute, and the bravest kid in the world. :loveya:

74. Thanks!

It really was an amazing jump. And if you haven't done one yourself, let me tell you that it is WAY scarier than skydiving (which, to be honest, isn't really "scary," just nerve-wracking as you wonder the whole way to the door what the fuck you were thinking when you paid good money for this ;) ).

However, if you're into this kind of stuff, I highly recommend doing it once.
(I never intend to do it again. Personally, feels like a rapidly diminishing return after the first-time "HOLY SHIT" factor.)

Also, thanks for the picture of your boy! I think I recall that perhaps your family has some more challenges than most to deal with; and that picture makes it crystal clear that you guys are doing an absolutely wonderful job.

Keep it up, keep safe, and see you around DU!

:toast:

p.s. The arm thing is easy, I just borrowed the bracers from Drizzt...

(edited for a mega-nerd literary reference I just couldn't resist)
