My wife, a Glock 19, and 50 rounds of ammunition
Yesterday was her first time practicing with a 9mm Glock at the gun range. And she was good.

Just wanted to share...

3. Uh-oh, now you've done it...
I feel a song coming on...

Glocks and Sig Sauers and 1911s,
AR-15s and AK-47s,
All of them fitted with tritium sights...
The Second Amendment says you have the right.

Winchester rifles with stocks done in camo,
Shotguns from Mossberg and plenty of ammo,
Your father's M1 from the Normandy fight...
The Second Amendment says you have the right.

If the mag holds
More than 10 shots,
Lautenberg gets mad.
The Second Amendment says you have the right,
So how can it be so bad?

Spray cans of BreakFree and gun-cleaning patches,
Silhouette targets in hundred-pack batches,
A new wrench for keeping that barrel nut tight...
The Second Amendment says you have the right.

Aimpoints and Leupolds and binocs from Bushnell,
Adjustable triggers and slings by the handful,
Rail-mounted Surefires to cut through the night...
The Second Amendment says you have the right.

If the stock folds
Or collapses,
It's on Feinstein's list.
The Second Amendment says you have the right,
So why is she still so pissed?

10. You are kind, all of you are - but I feel another song coming on
On the first day of Christmas, I bought for my AK
A box full of 7n10s!

On the second day of Christmas, I bought for my AK
Two cleaning kits
And a box full of 7n10s!

On the third day of Christmas, I bought for my AK
Three tritium sights
Two cleaning kits
And a box full of 7n10s!

On the fourth day of Christmas, I bought for my AK
Four zombie targets
Three tritium sights
Two cleaning kits
And a box full of 7n10s!

On the fifth day of Christmas, I bought for my AK
Five magazines!
Four zombie targets
Three tritium sights
Two cleaning kits
And a box full of 7n10s!

Okay, so the bullets will only work in an AK-74. I had to make the lyrics work somehow...

6. Bought my wife a Walther P22 and took her to the range.
The flame coming out of the barrel scared the shit out of her and she walked out after five rounds. Now the poor thing only gets to come out to play if I take it.

Where did you find 50 rounds of ammo?

The only reason I have any is because I bought a couple of cases before the election and now I'm afraid to go to the range because I may not be able to replace the ammo.

17. Replacing ammo
Is this a matter of economics or source access, OWTH? If the latter...do you order by Internet? Are you looking for target or defense rounds?

Are we allowed to post links to really good ammo sources here, or is that sort of thing gavotted?

And she loves her HP 995 carbine in 9mm. Loaded with Federal 147gr Hydra Shocks and a red dot sight she rarely misses out to 75yds or so.

14. I was going to complain...
...because I eagerly scrolled down expecting a photo.

But I got two songs instead. So can't gripe. Tonight we will break out the cocoa and Courvoisier and in due course hold a glee (to put it in 1930s lingo).

Better yet we'll dress up as Eddie Izzard to sing

FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE MAAAAGAAAAAAAZEEEEEEEEEENNNNS!

as it deserves.

In 20 years on the Internet, I have never before been motivated to use an animated emoticon. But you deserve it, derb.

21. It was Remy instead of Courvoisier...
...and no cocoa.

But the Eddie Izzard impersonations went all the better for it.

My wife is very partial to 9mm Glocks as well (she currently shoots and carries a G26). It was actually a friend's Glock 17 that got her interested in learning to shoot.

18. The Glock 19 may be the ideal "first handgun"
Edited on Wed Nov-25-09 08:25 AM by Euromutt
Or at least close to ideal as is currently available.

They're simple to operate and highly reliable; small enough for concealed carry, but big enough to be accurate at longer ranges; powerful enough for self-defense (assuming you're using JHPs), but with manageable recoil and sufficiently affordable ammunition to allow plenty of practice. And they're affordable.

On the (admittedly rare) occasions that a friend or in-law has asked my advice with regard to buying a first handgun, I tell them--assuming they're right-handed--to try out a Glock 19, an XD-9 4" if they don't quite like the Glock, and a Ruger SP-101 in .357M with a 3" barrel, loaded with .38 Spl, in case they find they prefer a revolver.

There are other good choices, of course; my own firearm of preference is a S&W M&P40 (I have a full-size in the quick-access lock box by my bed, and I carry a compact), but that's because I'm left-handed, plus I bought mine before they started becoming popular with police forces, and the price went up $150 as a result. Other promising options are the XD(M) and the Ruger LCR, but I haven't tried those out myself yet. I've fired an HK P2000v2, and I liked it a lot, but three things put me off: the high price, HK's reputation of horrible customer service, and the unavailability of Crimson Trace laser grips for that model.

I will say that I don't like Glocks myself, because they're quite southpaw-unfriendly. I know there's workarounds for that, but when I'm shelling out several hundred dollars for a gun (as opposed to having it issued by an agency), I'm not prepared to accept a gun that demands I adapt to it. But I acknowledge Glocks work very well for a lot of people, so just because they're not good guns for me doesn't mean they're not good guns overall.
