Took my CHL class today
There were 8 men and 3 women in my class, in DeepinaHarta, Texas (actually, Roanoke, but that sounds better.)

As I pulled into the rec center where the class was being given, I noticed three Obama stickers, one on a prius. Turned out later, that the prius belonged to daughter brought by her dad to get her CHL (he was there for a renewal.)

The only passing mention of politics _at all_ was when they were talking about wait times for processing paperwork, and how DPS got behind starting in November last year, and didn't catch up until March or April of this year.

Quite an interesting section on conflict resolution, awareness levels, and Texas law. Spent a lively discussion period talking about what was legal vs what was moral, and how each person has to draw the line for themselves.

Overall, had a good time. Scored 249/250 on the practical test, 98/100 on the written.

1. Good for you!
And not too bad a grouping, either.

3. Congratulations
Fantastic job of gun control. I scored the same 249/250 when I took the text two years ago.

4. The legal vs moral discussion is always an interesting one
Another topic that occasionally gets brought up when I teach is has anyone had to shoot someone and how did it effect them. About one class in three I get someone who has either shot someone or used violence in self defense.

7. Yes, I felt the Front Site Institute did an excellent job on that one
They taught that section to a large audience that included students in a wide variety of classes. I was there for Edged Weapons training. Most students were in defensive handgun classes. Some people were taking a submachine gun class. Some were being trained in empty hand fighting.

The philosophy is the same regardless of what form of deadly force you are using.

5. No, you scored 250/250. 8 ring is a 5 point shot.
A shot that cut a line is always counted at the higher point value.

10. True, but..
I told the instructor I was hoping for all 9, 10, or X's, so he said 'Yeah, technically it's a 250, but if you want to call it 249, I'm not going to argue.' :)

We had one 20-something marine whose last day in the corp was yesterday at midnight. That guy was scary accurate. All 10 or X's.

11. 27% vs 72% overall
3 of the guys were there for renewal, so there were 5 men and 3 women getting theirs for the first time, so 37% to 63% if you look at it that way.

Thanks for a real example of how RKBA is important to people of all political persuasions.

9. Congratulations!
Now you just have assloads of paperwork to complete before your card arrives in the mail!!

(at least in Florida you do)

But seriously, well done. Always good to have another responsible owner who actually bothers to learn how to, when to, and when not to use their handgun.

12. That was my last shot, or next to last, from 45'.
I definitely need to pull my sight picture up slightly. I replaced the sights in the last year, and I'm still not 100% used to them.

13. I don't think the sights are the problem.
You aren't making a straight trigger pull. Your finger is pulling the gun a bit down and to the left when you pull the trigger.

Ammo is expensive. Get a Laser, sight it in, and then practice dry-firing (Use snap caps to protect the gun's firing pin and mechanism.)until the laser doesn't wobble at all when you pull the trigger. My wife had a really bad case of flinch, and that cured it with her.

The targets come in black, green, blue, and WHITE. The white ones make your sights much easier to see. Next time, get some white ones yourself (Order online) and take them with you. Being able to easily see your sights makes a big difference. You will be amazed at how much a white target tightens up your groups.

14. While you were taking your class, my wife was taking her renewal.
Two ladies and twelve men in that class. On the written test, both ladies scored 100% and none of the guys did. All of the guys did better than the ladies on the shooting test. However, both ladies were seniors. The other lady had artharitis in her hand, and my wife had cut the thumb (Kitchen) in her support hand the morning of the test. She still passed handily.

She has once used her gun to defend her life. Bad guy ran away when he discovered that in picking a victim, he chose poorly.

Mini-14, Ruger's way to give AK's a chance of winning at benchrest.

If you had paid attention, in all the gazillions of rounds the A-team launched, they never hit anyone!

20. Say, useful!
Does that assume a right-handed shooter? Because if so, I just figured out what I've been doing wrong with my PT1911.

As well as their advantage in combat, they are also a great training aid.

22. I have Crimson Trace grips on my HD/SD guns
But my PT1911 is mostly for range fun, and there's only so many grips I can afford. Besides, while lasers are highly useful in identifying that you're doing something wrong (and how it's affecting your shooting), they can't tell you what it is and how to fix it.

I would assume the mirror image for left handed shooters.

28. 250 points total
70% score(175points) passes. I have seen very few do lower than 80-85%. My 75yr old Mom scored 89% with a 3" M60 snubby shooting 38 specials.
If you qualify with a revolver your only permitted to carry a revolver. Qualify with a semi-auto and you can carry either one, or both.
You get 3 chances to pass. Minimum caliber is 32, in both classes.

She hasn't gotten her card yet. Hopefully it will be soon.

I plan to take mine five months in advance. Give them plenty of time.
