Women Looking To Guns For Protection
Women Looking To Guns For Protection

Even though violent crime numbers are down across Central Florida, FBI statistics show Orange County leads the state in the number of rapes.

According to the latest numbers from the Sheriff's Department, there were 784 reported sex crimes in Orange County for 2008. So far this year, there have been 565 reported.

Numbers like that may have contributed to an increase in gun sales, many of them to women.

"I don’t have any threat to me, but it would be nice to know that I'm protected if something did happen," Jennifer Whitney said.

Whitney is 24 years old and single, and she said she is looking for a way to protect herself. She said she was shaky and nervous the first time she fired a gun.

1. In my CCW class of 14, 6 of them were women
and they are more likely to actually carry them then men. Women carry purses and it is much easier and convenient for them to carry.

11. Some purses are designed for concealed carry...
but many women don't find them fashionable.

My daughter often carries a revolver in her purse. If she feels she is in a location that might be dangerous, she will place her hand inside her purse on the weapon. If really necessary, she can shoot through the purse at close range.

10. Someone might take her firearm and use it on her, if...
she is unfamiliar with her firearm or lacks confidence.

My daughter stopped an intruder who was entering our home by forcing a sliding glass door open. A burglar alarm was sounding and there was a 60 pound female Black Lab in the home.

When she walked into the kitchen and found the man halfway through the door, she leveled her favorite revolver at him. He left in a hurry. No shots were fired and no one was injured.

My daughter was seventeen or eighteen years old, five foot two and less than 100 pounds. She had been shooting handguns at the range with me for at least nine years. The revolver she was holding so confidently was a S&W Model 25-2 .45 acp. This revolver is the same size firearm as Dirty Harry's .44 magnum, but the recoil is far more manageable.

Had my daughter looked frightened or unfamiliar with her handgun, the story might well have had a different ending. Any woman who desires to own a firearm for protection without a background in firearms should invest the time necessary to get good training and become proficient.

Children and guns require the exercise of common sense. A firearm can easily be locked up in a gun box that opens quickly with a simple combination.

An inexpensive gun box which would work well to insure children do not play with your firearm is the Honeywell 3035D Digital Locking Steel Box, which Amazon sells for $35.

http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-3035D-Digital-Locking-Steel/dp/B000MPO6OY/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1258099222&sr=1-23

Just owning a firearm will not guarantee safety from intruders. For more advice directed primarily at women visit:

who are capable of taking guns away with those super secret ninja powers. If carrying a gun were such a liability, then why to armies and cops world-wide carry them?

26. Not only can they take the gun from your hand...
...but they can make it fly clear across the dining table to their own hand. And that's after they've deflected your shots with their gloved hand, of course.

Chattanooga: 16-year-old shot with own gun during attempted robbery

A 16-year-old was shot with his own gun after he attempted to rob the residents at 3010 Dee Drive on Monday evening.

Jeff Lindsey and Tamika Martin told police four men came into their residence about 8 p.m. to purchase items from an in-home sundry, but Mr. Lindsey sensed something was wrong, said Chattanooga Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary.

One of the suspects began to pull a gun from his pocket and he and Mr. Lindsey struggled for the gun, resulting in the 16-year-old being shot in the arm, Sgt. Weary said.

He then fled the home.

29. That was the Bad Guy getting shot with his own gun. You were asked for Good Guys.
I will admit up front that sometimes a defender does get shot with his own gun. Two types of situations cause that to happen.

1. Too late going for your gun. If the attack has already started then a struggle for the gun may develop. But you are already being attacked anyway, so you may as well try for your gun.

2. The defender is unwilling to shoot. We gunnies on this forum often advise people not to attempt to bluff with a gun. If you don't think that you can pull the trigger on a BG, then you have no business having a gun. For a person like that, it will get taken away and used on them.

There are stupid bad guys that will attempt to attack into a gun. A couple of years ago, here in Texas, a homeowner attempted to hold a burglar at shotgun-point. The idiot thief dropped what he was stealling and started walking toward the resident. The resident started backing up and telling the bad guy to halt. When the good guy ran out of room, he fired the shotgun, catching the bad guy in the center of the guts with a load of birdshot. BG dropped on the spot and died three days later in the hospital from complications. The point of that story is that you can't depend on the gun to scare the BGs.

Once I have my gun in my hands, no bad guy is going to take it away from me. I will, however, freely give him the bullets if he insists.

8. A recommendation for any woman interested in owning a firearm...

An excellent site for any woman who has an interest in owning or using a firearm is at:

http://www.corneredcat.com/(Also an excellent site for men, although primarily directed at women.)

An extensive number of topics are covered including but not limited to: Firearm Safety, Choosing a Firearm, Kids and Guns, Shooting basics, and Ethical and Social considerations.

From the chapter entitled Making the Decision:

One of the first questions to consider, when deciding whether or not to even carry a gun, is, "Is it ever permissible to deliberately kill another human being?" Think about this long and hard. Within your moral view, are there any circumstances at all in which you believe it is not wrong to kill another person?

If your answer to this first, most basic, question is yes, you must then ask yourself the logical follow-up question: "Am I myself able to pull the trigger if that is what I must do in order to survive?" Within your own religious, ethical, and moral paradigms, can you reconcile yourself to doing whatever it takes? If your deliberate action kills another human being, will you be able to live with yourself afterward?

If you even suspect you cannot, you have no business carrying a gun no matter who tells you you ought to. That is nothing more than a tragedy waiting to happen. Instead of carrying a handgun, you may want to look into less-lethal defense options, such as pepper spray or martial arts classes. Although these intermediate steps will never level the playing field the way a gun does, they are an excellent choice for those who are unprepared to use lethal force.

Be aware, though: pepper spray is no magic potion. And many martial arts can be just as deadly as using a firearm, only more messy and less certain.
http://www.corneredcat.com/Mindset/decision.aspx

Many women make a poor decision by asking their husband or boy friend to teach them how to shoot. But a woman can tell a lot about the quality of her current boy friend or husband by how handles teaching her to shoot. If you are totally inexperienced and your significant other hands you a weapon that fires a .357 or .44 mag for you first shot, I would advise that you consider replacing him with an adult.

Do not even give him the opportunity to laugh at you when you pull the trigger on such a cannon. The recoil can turn you off shooting for the rest of your life.

But if your instructor starts you off with a .22 or a large frame .38 or 9mm, you may find shooting very enjoyable. Many of the women who asked me to teach them shooting were initially frightened. Most found the experience very enjoyable and were so proud of their target that they took it home to show their friends. After gaining familiarity with low recoiling firearms, they had little problem shooting .357 magnums and some were willing to try a .44 magnum like Dirty Harry used. (Even I tire of shooting a .44 mag after 25 rounds.)

I also found women learn faster than men when it comes to shooting. Men always think they have learned everything there is to know about shooting and guns from watching action films and playing computer games. Women are smarter than that and they listen and learn.

19. This is not a new trend...
REPORTER: Jeff Ferrell
DATE: May 19, 2006
Women and guns: A trend that's on the rise around the country, and right here at home. In fact, women will spend an estimated 285-million dollars on guns this year alone. And manufacturers are now catering more to them.
At the indoor shooting range known as Shooters USA, the owner told us that nearly 40-percent of their clients are now women, a dramatic increase from year's past. Paul Murray credits at least part of that surge to the after-effects of Hurricane Katrina, where images of looting and lawlessness night after night on television raised fears about what happens when normal services break down and chaos ensues.
But that's only part of the equation. The National Rifle Association, NRA, reports that women now constitute 15-percent of the gun market for shooting sports and hunting, as well. And gunmakers are now making weapons for that group with lighter, smaller, shorter and even flashier firearms to attract female buyers.

We went into a gun store so my wife could look at various shotguns. I was surprised by how many small-framed handguns were pink or baby-blue. My wife loved the pink ones and wants one. She thinks it is soooo cool.

23. I have even seen pink assualt weapons...

So called "Assault Weapons Bans" such as the now expired 1994 Clinton ban and the one still in place in states such as California seek to ban rifles that our misguided legislators feel have no purpose in civilian hands. They identify "evil features" they can use to generically classify these "military style" weapons in sweeping terms. Of course these features, such as plastic pistol grips, barrel shrouds, and bayonet lugs have absolutely nothing to do with the firearms potential lethality in the real world and are merely cosmetic features. After all, it really doesn't matter what color the firearm is if it fires the same ammunition right? Well, in the "spirit" of the California Assault Weapon Ban I decided to do my best to alleviate the fears of my fellow citizens and gun-banning legislators when I put together a new AR-15 for my wife. Below is the result of my painstaking work to transform an Evil Black Rifle (EBR) into a Cute Pink RIfle (CPR). Introducing the Hello Kitty AR-15!
