CBS 11 News

A burglary suspect is dead and another one critically injured after being shot by a startled homeowner.

The shooting happened Friday morning in the 4400 block of Shackelford street in east Fort Worth.

Fort Worth Police tell CBS 11 the homeowner shot the suspects after the two tried to enter the home by kicking in the front door. The homeowner started shooting, killing one of the suspects.

Neighbors say the homeowner then kept shooting at the second suspect as he tried to run away, following the suspect outside and shooting at the suspect's Ford Explorer.

Proving yet again that in Texas hot burglary is a very high risk occupation.

1. I an surprised at the number of burglaries in the Tampa area.
OK, so sue me for judging on appearances, but I see a lot of people in the mugshots that I say, "You did what?". I mean, angelic boys and respectable looking men (I don't look at the female mugshots) and you click on the link and it says they are charged with three counts of burglary of an unoccupied dwelling or one I don't understand at all, which is "burglary of a coveyance occ" . How do you burglarize an occupied conveyance? Unless perhaps the law regards mobile homes as conveyances.

5. A LOT of that occurs.
Although I am retired, I have a job to supplement my retirement. I work at a truck stop. I used to drive trucks a long time ago. The situation with truck burglaries is far worse now, than when I drove.

Many trucks are quite easy to break into. The theif will go into a truck stop, softly tap on a door. If the driver comes to the door, he tries to sell something to the driver. If nobody answers, he can be inside the truck in a few seconds.

Muggings in truck stop parking lots are common too, as are drug sales, protitutes, pimps, stolen goods sales, fake-stole-goods sales (A scam artist sells cheap jewelry, claiming to have recently stolen it. But the jewelry is actually legal.)etc. Murders in truck stop parking lots, while not yet frequent, are not all that uncommon either. The place where I work had one a few years back, and the one across the street had one a few months ago.

Truckers are forbidden, by federal law, to be armed, so they are easy targets. But lots of trucker take their chances and carry anyway. I didn't when I drove back when, but if I drove now, I probably would have a hidden gun in the truck.
