Yet another improperly stored M16 stolen

Select Fire Machinegun Stolen From Wheeling Police Officer's Vehicle

WHEELING, W.Va. -- Wheeling police are searching for the person who stole an assault rifle from a police officer's personal vehicle.

The M-16 was issued to the officer because he is a member of the department's SWAT team. Wheeling police Chief Robert Matheny said the rifle was tucked under the seat of the officer's vehicle when it was stolen

Matheny said he doesn't believe the weapon was loaded, but said some ammunition may have been stolen as well. The chief said he doesn’t think there was any negligence on the part of the officer.

1. What a fucknut.
Yeah, you leave an automatic weapon tucked under the seat, and you don't call that negligence? In his PERSONAL vehicle?

Doesn't matter if it was loaded or not--STANAG magazines are easy to get, and it fires the same ammo many civilian guns do. Of course good luck trying to sell it.

3. And just why was his vehicle unlocked with an assault rifle within easy reach?

4. Unlocked?
Where are you seeing that?

Still a numbnut for not securing it, but I didn't see anything about leaving his vehicle unlocked.

9. And there was nothing about it being locked it either.
It was at his home in the boonies. Why lock it when there is no one around?

13. Gotcha nothing. Read the article.
It never said one way or the other, whether it was locked or not. I'm betting not because it was not mentioned... and he was at his home in a rural area.

No information about the condition of the vehicle's locks, so you make assumptions based on what is known.

8. Why an M16?
Can someone explain to me exactly why a police force needs an M16 instead of an AR15? I cannot imagine one scenario where they would need full auto fire. Forget the danger issue with a knucklehead cop, it seems like such a waste of money.

BTW-I think that he personally has every right to own one, I just don't see the practical application in a police force.

11. surplus Federal property
A police department can buy a used M16 for a few hundred bucks, cheaper than a new semi-auto. Only those M16's that are already registered on an ATF Form 4 and can be legally transfereed to a mere civilian fetch the 16,000 to 20,000 price tags.

12. PDs can get them for as little as $150
It's almost enough to make me want to found my own town in the desert so I can be Chief of Police.

Personally, I'd rather equip 'our' police force with post sample AK-74s
