Arnold signs 962
AB962, the bill that would restrict ammunition sales in California was signed this past evening by Governor Schwarzennegger. His comments are below:

"To the Members of the California State Assembly: I am signing Assembly Bill 962.

This measure would require vendors of handgun ammunition to keep a log of information on handgun ammunition sales, store ammunition in a safe and secure manner, and require the face to-face transfer of ammunition sales.

14. Here's the 2006 NRA ratings...
for the House and the Senate. lots of Democrats get high ratings from the NRA:

http://www.votesmart.org/issue_rating_detail.php?r_id=3492

Also remember that Howard Dean was highly rated by the NRA and Bill Richardson governor of has a concealed carry permit. He's current governor of New Mexico. Both these guys ran in the primaries as potential Presidential Candidates.

In 2003, Richardson backed and signed legislation creating a permit system for New Mexicans to carry concealed handguns. He applied for and received a concealed weapons permit, though by his own admission he seldom carries a gun.<26>

5. Expect a jump
in legal and illegal ammunition sales before this goes into effect in February. I'm sure the gangs that smuggle drugs into California are glad that the state has opened up a new product and a vast consumer base for them to sell to. We'll be seeing gunpowder sniffing dogs at the border checkpoints within a few years.

Because, as several have noted, it would be perfectly legal to drive to those states and buy your ammunition there.

I admire Boxer greatly and agree with many of her positions, but respectfully disagree with her take on the Second Amendment.

I despise DiFi as the corporate-shill, B*sh-enabling, hypocritical, war-profiteering DINO that she is. Plus, I rather contemptuously disagree with her take on the Second Amendment.

I don't really know enough about Newsom to have a truly informed opinion about him, but disagree with his take on the Second Amendment.

I do support the Democratic Party platform that affirms and upholds the Second Amendment.

21. If they're smart, they'll do what Barrett did with the .50 BMGs.
Start refusing to sell to California law enforcement until the ban is lifted. The California LEOs can get along without heavy sniper rifles... they can't get along without ammo of any kind.

25. The other thing the .50 BMG ban did...
Was spawn a new caliber- .510 DTC

This not only evaded the overly specific ban language, it turned out to have better ballistics and hit harder than .50 BMG.

I've already seen a few entrepreneurs on gun forums proposing to re-brand "pistol" calibers as "rifle" calibers to avoid specific caliber restrictions. 10mm Auto becomes 10mm Carbine, .45 Automatic Colt Pistol becomes .45 Automatic Colt Carbine, etc.

No idea on the legality of that, but people are already looking for loopholes.

30. Please note that the version of the bill that passed says nothing about individuals bringing in ammo
From other states for personal use.

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/09-10/bill/asm/ab_0951-1000/ab_962_bill_20091011_chaptered.html

It does ban most mail-order sales, but there will be no restrictions against driving to Arizona, Nevada, etc., buying ammunition there, and bringing it back to California.

California is only about 200 miles wide. Granted, most of the population lives within 20 or 30 miles of the coast, but still...
