GUNS IN THE NEWS--November 28. 2003
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current for the Monday thread, stories should have been originally posted to the 'Net on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday. (This allows for the fact than many people are off-line over the weekend, allowing the Monday thread to be a weekend summary.) On all other days of the week, stories should have been originally within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories are welcome in this thread, as well as gun-related editorials, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to stories or articles from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA's or Handgun Control, Inc.) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er will be reported to the moderators

1. More Reports of Shots Fired at Ohio Cars
"COLUMBUS, Ohio - More people have reported shots possibly being fired at vehicles along the same stretch of highway where a woman was killed by a gunshot that penetrated a car door, authorities said Thursday.
A law enforcement task force already was investigating the shootings on or near a stretch of Interstate 270, the highway that circles Columbus, and extra police were sent to patrol the area on Thursday.
The first shooting was reported in May and others had come in the past 6 1/2 weeks in the area just south of Columbus. Tuesday's killing of Gail Knisley made a total of nine.
The sparsely populated area features woods frequented by hunters and people practicing target shooting, along with industrial sites and some suburban neighborhoods. "

13. Ohio Authorities: Shooting Not an Accident
"COLUMBUS, Ohio - The fatal shooting of a woman through a car door was not an accident and has been linked to at least one other shooting along the same road, authorities said Friday.
Authorities have been investigating 10 shootings since May on or near the stretch of Interstate 270, the highway that circles Columbus.
On Tuesday, Gail Knisley, 62, was killed after a bullet ripped through the driver's door of her best friend's car, narrowly missing the driver.
"You just can't believe someone would be sick enough to be shooting at cars," Missi Knisley, Gail Knisley's daughter-in-law, said Friday. "

2. Police Charge Man After He Shoots Cousin In Head (MO)
Another "conservationist" in action...

"The Clay County Sheriff's Office charged a 21-year-old man who shot and killed his cousin while apparently trying to shoot at an animal through the open window of a car.
James C. Miller faces one count of first-degree involuntary manslaughter for the shooting, which took place Tuesday at about 7:20 p.m.
Miller told police that he and his cousin, Christopher Dale Berry, were at Cooley Lake just east of Missouri City Tuesday night. Miller was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle, and Berry was on the driver's side. Miller told police that when the two saw a raccoon a few feet away, he fired a .22-caliber rifle through the open driver's side window. As he was moving the rifle to fire another shot, Miller said the gun went off, striking Berry in the head. "

6. Yes, Guns are bad.
Man, 73, kills robber holding shears to wife's neck
By BILL BRYAN
Post-Dispatch
11/19/2003

A man in north St. Louis County was home watching "Death Wish," a movie about a vigilante who hunts down criminals, when he saw his wife held hostage by a robber holding shears at her neck.

Allowed to get his wallet, the homeowner retrieved his pistol instead and shot the intruder to death, county police said Wednesday after sorting out details of the previous evening's incident.

It happened about 8 p.m. Tuesday in the 11500 block of Lares Drive, a usually quiet neighborhood just east of New Halls Ferry Road and north of Interstate 270.

The residents asked police not to reveal their names. The man and family members declined interview requests.

Police gave this account:

An intruder, 26, broke into the home through a basement window and tore down a curtain to tie over his face as a mask. The woman encountered him in the basement and he forced her up the stairs to confront her husband.

Police said the husband, 73, was watching the movie on TV when the stranger approached, demanding money and holding 4-inch shears to the throat of the woman, also 73.

The homeowner told the intruder he had to get his wallet from the bedroom, but he got a handgun instead. When he emerged, she pulled away and he opened fire.

The robber grabbed the wife again and pulled her through the front door with him, but then let her go and ran. He collapsed across the street, where he was pronounced dead.

The woman was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released.

The dead robber was identified through fingerprints, but his name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

Privately, police officers praised the outcome, saying that burglars should take a lesson from it.

County detectives said they believed the dead burglar might be responsible for other home invasions and burglaries.

Earl Garvin, a neighbor, said he had known the homeowner for 30 years. "He's such a nice man. He's a very fine guy."

8. Bronx Clerk Shot in Theft Try
"A Bronx bodega worker, shot during an attempted robbery, is expected to survive, but friends said yesterday that they are worried about his safety if he returns to work because it's the second shooting there in the past four months.
Jose Valdez, 48, was shot in the stomach during the Wednesday night confrontation inside the Valdez Grocery on East 165th Street in Morrisania, police said. He is in critical condition at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, where doctors told police, as well as Valdez's wife, Gladys, and their children, that Valdez is expected to survive.
On July 29, Valdez's friend, the owner of the store, also was shot by a robber, who entered the shop with an accomplice. The owner suffered serious wounds to his abdomen, but he eventually recovered, according to the owner's wife, who would not give her name."

14. Lennon killer's signed album on sale
Another reminder of the benefits we've all reaped from having the corrupt gun industry set public policy....

"NEW YORK (Reuters) - The album John Lennon autographed for his assassin just five hours before the former Beatle was killed has gone up for sale for $525,000 (305,000 pounds).
According to the site, the album's cover and dust jacket contain the "forensically enhanced" fingerprints of Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman.
Chapman shot the pop star outside the Dakota apartment building, Lennon's Manhattan home, on December 8, 1980. The album was later found in a flower planter near the building and was used as evidence against Chapman."

15. Pueblo man arrested in abduction, shooting
The "gun rights" crowd turn theory to practice....

"PUEBLO - A man accused of abducting and shooting his girlfriend and abusing one of her sons was arrested after allegedly trying to enter a school armed with a handgun and three knives.
Robert Lee Cowan, 34, was arrested Tuesday on charges of kidnapping, menacing with a deadly weapon, third-degree assault, domestic violence, child abuse and possessing a weapon at a school.
Investigators said Cowan forced Buffy Dasher, 32, to go to a paramilitary compound near Bozeman, Mont., last week along with their 2-year-old son and Dasher's two sons from previous relationships.
After they returned to their home outside Pueblo, one of Dasher's sons told his biological father that Cowan had shot Dasher and abused one of the boys, Pueblo County Sheriff Dan Corsentino said.
At least one of the boys showed signs of abuse and Dasher had sought medical attention for a gunshot wound to the leg she received in Montana, Corsentino said."

17. Shooting victim released from hospital (MD)
"A man naked and bleeding from a bullet wound in the back turned up at the Baltimore County home of retired Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken last night, pleading for help, county police said.
The man, Brian Robins, 20, of Baltimore, was found outside Ripken's home north of Baltimore shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday and was taken by helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.
Police spokeswoman Sgt. Vickie Warehime said Robins told police he had been kidnapped near his home in Baltimore City by three men in a white Lexus.
Nine hours later, Robins reported, he was released in a field near Ripken's home, on the west side of Dover Road near Tufton Avenue, where he was told to strip naked and start running.
The man said he heard several shots and was struck once in the back, police said. Investigators found blood near Dover Road, and followed it across the road, over a fence and onto Ripken's front porch."

18. Payback runs from the suites to the streets (MD)
"JAMES STOKES went to eternity Monday afternoon as Baltimore's 234th homicide victim of the year. All we know about him is the information provided in a news brief.
A man stepped from a car about 12:30 p.m. and shot Stokes in the head, according to Baltimore police. We don't know the motive. Perhaps Stokes was a victim of one of those revenge killings The Sun's Del Quentin Wilber wrote about in an article Saturday.
"My philosophy of policing is to get very assertive," Norris said. "Make it very uncomfortable for people to carry their guns." During his tenure as police commissioner, Norris said, police were able to defuse a dispute between two drug gangs by getting them off the street. "
