A topless teenage girl with a handgun holstered on her hip was arrested Sunday afternoon near a busy intersection in downtown Keene.

Cassidy Nicosia, 18, was arrested on a charge of indecent exposure at about 1:30 p.m. near the Main-Marlboro-Winchester streets roundabout.

Nicosia was arrested after police answered multiple complaint calls about a topless girl walking through downtown Keene with a group of armed protesters affiliated with the Free State Project, Keene police Sgt. James A. Cemorelis

The Free State Project is an effort to convince 20,000 people to move to New Hampshire and participate in activism and run for local and state office....

In Canada (at least those provinces where there have been court rulings), it is not illegal for women to be topless in public.

Note that the women who fought the cases would not appreciate the characterization "showing your natural gifts", since they were not seeking to "show" anyone anything; they were seeking to exercise their liberty and equality rights by dressing as they saw fit on the same basis as men. (Note also that they would not likely concur in women displaying their bodies to attract attention for a cause, let alone this one.)

And I will just keep hearing about how free everybody is in the US ...

A lot of what we think we know about the Puritans was basically fabricated by Victorian-era historians, because the fact is that the Puritans weren't anywhere near as prudish as they're made out to be. They didn't approve of extramarital sex, but it was fine to enjoy sex with your spouse.

US has it horribly wrong on this issue. From an ideological pov it is entirely unforgivable for a nation that screams about how free it is.

However, it is a liberty almost no one takes advantage of up in Canada. In all my years of living in Canada (I'm from there) and living in provinces where it was legal I have never seen bare breasts in a public space in my entire life that were being intentionally displayed. So, just so you know, the moral norms of Canadians tend to keep this a vanishingly rare sight despite the legality.

I'll take the 2nd amendment and the right to be nude as a good thing.

12. The "Go topless" march in Venice Beach, CA didn't attract a lot of attention...

Had the participants also carried firearms openly, they would have had a lot more media coverage.

Woman are fighting for their constitutional right to go topless and on Sunday Aug 23, 2009 protest rallies were held in seven cities in the U.S.

The media paid little attention to these marches.

The movement has a web page at Go Topless.org (Warning, the link does show topless women.)

My personal opinion is that women should be allowed the same rights as men, unfortunately, all too often the men who do exercise this right should also exercise commonsense. I would imagine that the reality of women being allow to go topless in public wouldn't be interesting as the fantasy.

There's precedent that exposing your breasts to protest "indecent exposure" laws is protected speech, and having looked at some of the video footage, it seems to me the Free Staters involved were out to make a political point. Looked like they were all OCing, and most of the guys were shirtless, so it looks like they were trying to goad the cops into arresting somebody for something so they could make an issue out of it.

ETA: I wonder whether there's such a thing as a GoTopless.org t-shirt?
