14. That should be a warning sign somewhere.
Something to put along canyons where there are no guardrails:

Caution: Darwinism in effect.

7. That's not one for gun control but simple gun safety.
Something that idiots fail at constantly.

You know that old saying "It's not a toy." To idiots...it's a toy.

8. Get trained.
This is a classic case for firearm training. If you are going to buy a firearm, you should buy some training to go with it.

A firearm is not the sort of device that you want to open the box, toss the instructions aside, and fiddle with until you make it work properly.

9. Maybe require training like they do for driving a car?
Oh no, that would be too restrictive. Sorry, logic does not apply.

11. Actually, many places do just that.
For pistols, anyway--long guns are harder to shoot yourself with. The catch is that some of us already know how to properly handle guns, and so it would be wasted requiring everybody to do it. Simple answer is that if you must have something similar, have a proficiency test and make the class optional.

That's exactly what we do. (Not so much proficiency as safety, of course.)

Except for under-age possession licences, for which children (12-18) must take the course.

13. Exactly like driving a car.
Maybe require training like they do for driving a car?

I think it should be exactly like driving a car. That is, if you are going to carry a firearm in public or on public lands, you have to have a license and demonstrate proficiency. Many states already do this, requiring licensing for carrying firearms in public and a hunter safety test for people who hunt on public lands.

However, just like for cars operated only on public property, firearms on public property require no licensing, no registration, or any other kind of paperwork.

22. I've missed something again

However, just like for cars operated only on public property, firearms on public property require no licensing, no registration, or any other kind of paperwork.

That cloaking device that lets you take your vehicle off your property without anybody noticing.

Or is it a shrinking device that lets you put your vehicle in your pants pocket?

Analogies only work when the points of DISsimilarity don't kinda defeat the whole analogy, don't they?

25. If you're going to break the law...
If you're going to break the law, you're going to break the law.

My analogy was intended to illustrate how lawfully operating automobiles was just like lawfully bearing firearms.

In order to lawfully operate a vehicle in public, you need a license and registration and insurance. You need none of these things to lawfully operate a vehicle on private property.

Likewise, in order to lawfully carry a firearm in public, you need a license. Again you need none of these things to lawfully operate a firearm on private property.

Lawbreakers, of course, will do whatever they want whenever they want.

Edited on Mon Jun-29-09 05:25 PM by RamboLiberal
for carry license. Course these 2 Darwin candidates may have yet to apply for a license. In PA all you need for a carry license is a clean record & $25. You don't have to show you know how to safely handle a firearm or that you can hit what you are aiming at.

No excuse though since there a plenty of clubs that offer NRA basic gun safety classes.

I'd love to know what firearm was too complicated for these two!
