Hank Williams Jr. Can’t Reload in Ammunition Shortage
April 15 (Bloomberg) -- Gun City USA, the largest gun store in Nashville, Tennessee, has sold arms to country music stars Hank Williams Jr., George Jones and their entourages. What it can’t sell them much of right now is ammunition to reload.

“We have very, very little of any caliber,” said Larry Baity, a 74-year-old counter clerk at Gun City who said he has waited on Williams. “We’re virtually out. We’ve got a lot of bare shelves.”

The scene at Gun City is playing out across the U.S. as record gun sales deplete stocks from ammunition makers Alliant Techsystems Inc. and Olin Corp. Demand for firearms is being driven in part by concern that U.S. President Barack Obama may impose new controls, said Matt Rice, a spokesman for Springfield, Massachusetts-based Smith & Wesson Holding Corp.

-----

Williams, who lists “fishing, hunting, gun collecting” as hobbies on his Web site, posted a separate video on YouTube in October in which he called the shotguns owned by his father and grandfather “sacred things.”

“When Barack Obama said folks like you and me were bitter, and clinging to guns and religion, I knew he just doesn’t understand small town America,” Williams said in the spot for McCain. “We love our God, and we love our guns.”

Hey Hank, you and your rowdy friends need to wise up and stop this Y2K black helicopter paranoia. Quit being greedy jerks by panic buying. I'm pissed at all these bare ammo shelfs I'm seeing because of idiot hoarders!

13. Read your Bible...
Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. It is written: `And he was numbered with the transgressors' ; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. (Luke 22:35-38, NIV)

38. Of course that's the question...
but when a person makes a statement like that, I would assume that they believe in the existence of Jesus. Since so many Christians take the Bible as literal truth, I like to point out that while Christ opposed violence, he did indicate that he was not against having a weapon for self defense.

They may not say they "cling" to something but anyone that has their favorite piece of clothing, favorite hat, attend a church regularly, need to call their significant other daily or multiple times daily. Don't want to change jobs because they are unsure of what might happen. They are all clinging to something.

50. It amazes me how people misconstrue that speech.
His statement in the primaries was meant to describe potentially an attitude in rural America. It can also describe anti immigrant and anti trade sentiment in the inner cities, without the reference to guns and religion. Typically the rural areas of the country have a tradition of gun ownership for hunting and self defense since services such as grocery stores and a large police force have not replaced the people's need to feed themselves and provide for their security needs. There is typically more of a sense of independence in those areas. What Obama was saying was that given the state of poverty in rural America and the empty promises of renewal and assistance given by the past several administrations it is understandable that people in those communities would be angry, resentful, and more willing to vote for a candidate that would purport to defend their most important issues their religious beliefs which guide their lives, and the guns which provide them food and protect their lives. People think incorrectly, that he was insulting rural Americans and though his comments were overly simplistic, they were attempting to describe how a mistrust of government and a trend toward self reliance came to be. Instead people who are pro-firearms tend to see it as how Obama is out of touch and anti-firearms people use it as a way to support their own backwards prejudices.

Instead of continually beating each other over the head with insults over one issue, we need to focus on the real causes of violence in this country: Poverty, greed, desperation, resentment, and a disconnect by people from one another. Guns are dangerous tools with the potential to cause great damage but they are not evil and they DO NOT CAUSE violence. They have been used to defend life and freedom and they have been used to take them away, but in each of those uses the most important ingredients have been the individual and the society that influenced and motivated that individual to act with that firearm. Alone, a firearm is just metal, plastic, and wood. In the hands of the wrong person it becomes a tool of destruction. In the hands of the right person it is a defensive tool. We need to focus on creating and sustaining an environment that minimizes the development of people who would use firearms for ill.

42. Whoa, Red Rider...
Hank Williams Sr. died less than 5 years after his first number 1 hit. While Junior was not destitute, he was not brought up in the lap of luxury either. I think he has a better understanding of how real people live than you give him credit for. He's also not afraid to help others. If you check him out, you'll find he donated $125 grand to a Hurricane Katrina effort in Biloxi, MS. I wonder how many of our rich politicians and celebrities can say that.

Now, for the reloading part - I guess you can call me a gun nut too. I am buying the tools and materials to load my own ammo. I have no confidence in either side of the political spectrum, since both parties have demonstrated a willingness to ignore the constitution if it suits them. I spent twenty years in uniform, both active and reserve, defending my country. All I want now is to have my right to self-defense not be taken away.

Is that too much to ask?

worse that insisting on garden variety rifles, which make up less than 3% of the homicides fwiw - all long guns.

here's a hint. the difference between "assault weapons" and your garden variety deer rifle is COSMETIC and many so called assault weapons are much less powerful/deadly than the non-banned rifles.

51. I agree with you.
I support the right to own and carry firearms but I try to see what the other side is saying and if there is a way to address the issue constructively. Although I may get heated when I think the arguments are getting personal and attacking, I understand people's need to feel safe. I just disagree about what is causing the danger and how to address it. The name calling on both sides is counter productive. Let's talk about crime, violence, poverty, mental health, and keeping guns out of the hands of people who have no respect for the law or other people.

55. According to this from last month Remington is working overtime
Edited on Sat Apr-18-09 07:09 PM by RamboLiberal
Here are a few comments from Remington - specifically from John Chisnall, Director - Brand Management, Ammunition.

“Strong 2008 4th quarter hunting seasons and “putting food on the table” in these difficult economic times have driven some of the strong demand being experienced in hunting ammunition categories.

“Regarding supply, our factory is working overtime and doing the best they can to address the demand.

“With regards to pricing, costs have stabilized as commodity prices and energy prices have stabilized, and pricing has decreased in some categories despite strong shooter demand.”
