Gallup: Support for more gun control hits all-time low
Edited on Wed Apr-08-09 10:39 AM by Pullo
"Gun control support at all-time low

The heavy coverage of mass shootings in Binghamton, N.Y., North Carolina and Washington state and the cop killings in Pittsburgh has had little apparent effect on the nation's appetite for new gun laws.

A Gallup Poll out this morning shows support for a ban on private hand gun ownership at an all time low, with 29 percent of respondents saying they support such a law. It's the smallest percentage since Gallup started asking this question 50 years ago. Interestingly, gun control advocacy hit its all time high in 1959, according to this poll. It's important to note that the poll was taken before the massacre in Binghamton, but other mass shootings have been in the news for a few weeks.

The poll may show why virtually nobody in Congress is rolling out new gun control legislation. Indeed, when I served on a panel earlier this year with Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), he said there didn't seem to be any appetite for new gun control laws, even with a Democratic president and an expanded liberal majority in Congress."

4. Maybe people have woke up to the fact that "feel good" gun laws...
give you a nice warm feeling and nothing else. Like peeing in your pants.

Plus a ban on private handgun ownership would run afoul of the recent Supreme Court decision.

If you could overcome that, the massive pro-gun vote at the next election would be truly amazing. Handgun owners would show up in mass and vote Republican including many Democrats. So much for passing into law all the good things our party hopes for.

And if your handgun ban was able to survive all this, you would find that many handgun owners would refuse to turn over their weapons. Therefore, you would want to go door to door and confiscate them. If you enjoyed watching the mentally unstable individual in Pittsburgh in his recent confrontation with the police, you'll love watching TV when the police start a large-scale confiscation of handguns.

5. More people are waking up every day.
And as I currently see it. The greatest good I can do is correct this "assault weapons" bullshit. I recently turned a few people who were all into the AWB until I told them what rifles would actually be banned. They were like "No, that can't be right. That's just a semi-auto rifle." I got them straightened out. They were none to happy to find out they had bee lied to.

6. You left out the best part.

UPDATE/CORRECTION: The folks at Media Matters have made a fair point in criticizing this post, noting that the polling was done several months ago -- even though Gallup posted this poll just today. It's still worth noting that there isn't yet a ground swell of support in the Democratic Congress for new gun control laws in wake of the tragic shootings, but I should have drilled into this polling data more closely. Paul Helmke of the Brady Campaign, writing in HuffPo, has also taken Gallup to task, calling the release of the poll today misleading.

Thanks anyway for posting RW GOP propaganda.

7. considering the spike in sales
I'd say it's MORE than just "RW nut jobs" causing the spike. If the attitudes of congress say anything, I'd say support is still low.

10. Fear of what?
Fear of gun regulations is not limited too just "NRA nut jobs" from the conversations I've had with store owners, people from ALL wakes of life and party affiliations are coming out of the woods. There are a LOT of new gun owners(at least around here).

There's also the political fear of handing the election to the "pro gun" party.. none of us want to see that happen.

13. Obama, the faceless govt, the urban untermensch, the foreign hoards, everything.
The GOP feeds off it - its the only way they can survive. Owning a gun is an act of fear.

14. LOL..... No really LOL
I use that title so much it comes in it's own little drop down menu... gotta love firefox.

I don't fear obama, the urban w/e, or foreign hoards. I own my gun for fun, is owning a gun purely for pleasure an act of fear? Because I know I am not alone.

8. So
You think the results would be any different today than they were a few months ago considering gun and ammo sales have not slowed down at all.

I think the polls would show a minor shift twards gun control in light of the recent shootings. I think a few of the "no opinion" would change.

EDIT: Woops I thought you were addressing me... still not quite used to this style of forum.
