Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand Rids Bedroom of Rifles (NY)
Kirsten Gillibrand’s been having to make some life changes since taking over Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat.

In addition to shifting her stance on immigration, Gillibrand has been slowly backing away from her once-integral gun policy. To that end, Gillibrand met with gun control advocates and, in perhaps the most personal move, removed two guns from beneath her bed.

Gillibrand revealed last week she slept with two allegedly unloaded rifles under her bed for protection, an admission that had gun control activists in a rage. Now Newsday reports that the mother of two moved the firearms. A spokesman, however, downplayed the importance of public scrutiny: "Given that the location of the guns has been disclosed, they have been moved for security reasons," said Gillibrand’s spokesman Matt Canter.

Of course Gillibrand’s potential 2010 election opponents took the chance to take a dig at her for it.

"With Kirsten Gillibrand keeping two rifles under the bed and Chuck Schumer being so anti-gun, Schumer and Gillibrand have to be the Senate’s oddest couple," joked Rep. Peter King, R-NY, to Newsday.

3. Sensible thing
I would have also removed those rifles from under my bed if I told the media about it.

I just hope she doesn't back away and give in to the anti's demands.

4. I'm curious...
What kind of rifles were they? Fudd guns? Or were they Evil Black Rifles?

5. Unloaded rifles aren't much use for protection now are they?

7. But much more expensive and less ergonomic. Not to mention more fragile.

9. My rifle under my bed is also unloaded.
A pair of magazines clipped together however are close by in a separate location and that rifle can be made ready to defend the master bedroom quite quickly. Far more effective than a baseball bat.

10. Ordinarily I have my Persuader by the bed
7 rounds of Winchester Ranger low-recoil 9 pellet in the tube, empty chamber, five rounds of Federal Tactical 1 oz. Hydra-Shock rifled slugs in the cuff on the stock. Don't feel right leaving a shotgun with a loaded chamber, they haven't got the same level of safety features that any modern handgun does, but I feel that those twelve shells are enough to properly deal with any situation I might run into. And despite the pretty heavy recoil, those slugs are definitely accurate enough to extend my reach beyond a responsible distance. Certainly enough to make someone realize they fucked up hard somewhere along the way.

11. What happened to responsible gun safety?
People knew she kept rifles under her bed, therefore that location was no longer safe.

Yet again DUers--even the counterculture DUers--go for the narrative of betrayal. She comes out of a meeting with Bloomberg, issues a statement about keeping guns away from criminals, and suddenly people act like she's flip-flopped even though she was on the record being for strong background checks.
