GUNS IN THE NEWS--October 24, 2003
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following guidelines:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted to the 'Net within the past 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories are welcome in this thread, as well as gun-related editorials.
3 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
4 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
5 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.

1. Spain gets 25 years in shooting
"Perry Spain, the West Baltimore man convicted of shooting a 10-year-old in the neck with a stray bullet, was sentenced yesterday to 25 years in prison by Circuit Court Judge Shirley M. Watts, who called the crime "vicious and heinous."
"I don't think you appreciate the seriousness of your conduct," Watts told Spain, 21, who was convicted this year in the shooting of Tevin Davis as the child played on the steps of his rowhouse in July last year.
Prosecutor Roger Harris said Tevin is the epitome of an innocent victim.
"He was sitting on his own stoop outside his own house in his own neighborhood," Harris said. "He was doing what families are supposed to do, even in Baltimore City. He was playing." "

6. Sniper suspect reinstates his defense team
The latest from the RKBA crowd's poster boy...

"VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Citing a change of heart and an abscessed tooth that swelled his right cheek to the size of a lemon, sniper suspect John Allen Muhammad rehired his lawyers yesterday - and vowed not to fire them again.
Muhammad is charged with two counts of capital murder in the death of Dean H. Meyers, a civil engineer shot at a gas station near Manassas last October. It was one of 13 shootings in the Washington region that month that spread fear through the community.
Prosecutors yesterday presented evidence from several earlier shootings that have been linked to Muhammad and his co-defendant, 18-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo. Jurors heard gripping testimony from a Maryland man who was shot while locking up his liquor store in Prince George's County on Sept. 15, 2002."

Worth noting that the gun lobby is currently trying to engineer a bill through Congress so that the Bullseye Gun Shop, which provided guns to this nutcase AND Buford Furrow, who shot up a daycare center and killed a mailman a few years ago, can avoid being sued. Wonder what the lawsuit might uncover about the way the gun industry arms such specimens?

Woman shoots carjack suspect in N.O.

Friday October 24, 2003

By Tara Young
Staff writer

A Boutte woman shot a man twice in the chest after he allegedly tried to force her to give up her Jeep Cherokee on Thursday afternoon in the Warehouse District, the New Orleans Police Department said.

Thorlief Thorbjornsen, 42, who is homeless, was listed in serious but stable condition Thursday at Charity Hospital.

The 32-year-old woman told police she had left work and was getting into her vehicle at a U-Park lot in the 800 block of Camp Street about 5 p.m. when Thorbjornsen approached her, indicated he had a handgun and demanded she get out of her car.

Instead of complying, the woman reached into the center console of her Jeep and pulled out a 9 mm pistol. She shot Thorbjornsen twice in the torso, said Capt. Marlon Defillo, NOPD spokesman.

Thorbjornsen collapsed behind the woman's SUV, Defillo said. He did not have a weapon.

Defillo said police will not book the woman but as a formality will turn the case over to the Orleans Parish district attorney's office for review.

When Thorbjornsen is released from the hospital, he will be arrested and booked with attempted carjacking, Defillo said.
