Parents: Teacher silenced son on hunting
Parents: Teacher silenced son on hunting

June 20, 2008

By Dennis Jensen Herald Staff

BENNINGTON — Saying their son was "silenced" by his teacher for talking about hunting in the classroom, the parents of a fourth-grade student at North Bennington Graded School took their son out of school and have taken their case to the local school board.

"The breaking point for us, his parents, came when Jared was sharing a conversation during his free period snack time at school. He was talking with a friend about the recent spring 2008 turkey season. Both boys had been out hunting with their dads and Jared was asking his friend where he had gotten his first turkey.

"Jared's teacher covered her ears, trying to block the conversation, and singing 'la la la la.' When asked by another school employee about her odd behavior, the teacher claimed she did not want to hear about the boys and their 'killing.' The boys were left feeling that they were not legitimate hunters, but 'killers' in the eyes of an important authority figure in their lives," Bordwell said.

Jared "has a working knowledge of firearms, archery and the sport of hunting," Bordwell said.

After Jared's parents decided to take up the matter with the school board, Backus assigned 137 pages of homework for the boy.

(this isn't necessarily about guns per se, but its gun related enough IMO...if not, move to the correct forum please mods)

TEN year old kid is given 137 pages of homework by this loon, right near the end of the school year because his parents have the audacity to question the teacher and bring the teachers actions into question with the schoolboard?

WTF.

3. Stupid...
At least these kids have some personal experience with where meat actually comes from and know it doesn't arrive into the world pre-packaged and sanitary. I never hunted myself, but I grew up on a small ranch with chickens, rabbits, and pigs raised for food. I harbor no such illusions myself.

(from the article)

"Reached through a relative, Backus declined to comment."

Gee...I wonder why... :eyes: :sarcasm:

On edit: I have no trouble at all believing what the teacher did, since our now 22 year old daughter was nearly failed by one of her high school teachers for her contesting her teachers "collectivist" teachings of the second amendment.

Only the ones who abuse their positions to further their personal political ideas at the expense of students' freedom to express their own.

12. I don't think anyone contests the fact that she gave the kid 137 pages of homework
that she didn't give to anyone else in the class.

And FWIW, the teacher admits that the kid was talking to another kid privately, at snack/break time. He was not disrupting the class.

14. If I was in the 4th grade, I would want my parents acting as such (nt)
What's your beef with these parents? They have a RIGHT to know why a teacher would cover their kid's ears, prevent him from speaking & hearing, assign novelette-length homework assignments and try to twist recess into repression. So she doesn't like hunting, does that give her the right to repress someone who has a legal right to hunt?

She shouldn't be fired. She should be backed up and told to cease her petty dictates. These parents claims aren't bogus, unless you believe in coercing kids so that they might conform to YOUR personal agenda.

Proof, please that the parents claim that (in your words)a teacher "would cover their kid's ears, prevent him from speaking & hearing, assign novelette-length homework assignments and try to twist recess into repression."?

Nut job parents are the reason so many great teachers leave the profession.

Please re-read the op, hell never mind.....

Jared's teacher covered her ears, trying to block the conversation, and singing 'la la la la.' When asked by another school employee about her odd behavior, the teacher claimed she did not want to hear about the boys and their 'killing.'

Seeing as she was acting like a fucking 3 year old, my statement above hopefully holds true in this case!

You asked someone else for "proof please" farther down the thread, now its your turn to pony up, little camper.

Proof please, that the parents claim was "written by a lawyer".

Oh, and are you implying that people that hunt turkey - or their parents or children - are "nut jobs"?

8. Sounds absolutely true to me.
Many people seem to think meat grows on trees, and that hunting is somehow sadistic and horrible, yet deli sandwhiches are perfectly fine. Someone this intolerant does not belong in an elementary school. Reminds me of the boy suspended for having a pen with the Glock logo on it. Ridiculous overstepping of bounds by the teacher.

It actually kind of hits home with me, in high school I was suspended basically for having a picture of a Sig Sauer P226 on my HOME computer. Some teachers/people really get carried away with this stuff.

13. On a personal note,
Edited on Thu Jul-17-08 11:05 AM by Spoonman
Myself and nine other parents actually had the science teacher at our middle school fired for something similar.
There were five boys total who all had parents that took them hunting, and of course they were bragging to each other about their individual opening weekend deer hunting experience.
The teacher berated them with accusations of animal cruelty and made the statement that "your fathers are horrible people", and "nothing more than trash" for "killing innocent animals".

After a short meeting with the Principle and Superintendent, they agreed with all ten parents that nothing short of termination would be excepted.

She was terminated 9 days after the incident!

20. isn't it nice to live in a jurisdiction

where workers have no rights?

No teacher's union in Canada would defend a teacher for doing what that teacher did. But no decent union in the world would stand by when the employment of a member was terminated without gradual discipline having been applied, unless the offence were so egregious that, in the case of a teacher, s/he could no longer be permitted to have contact with children.

Of course, when a woman teacher insults the menz and their sacred man stuff like guns 'n hunting, she should know what will happen.

I wonder how many teachers have not been terminated for saying vile things about women who have abortions ...

21. Gums oh flappin
and not one valid point the whole reply!

Let's start by clearing up one thing........AGAIN!

HEY, this ain't Canada eh!

This had NOTHING to do with the "menz", the mothers were more vocal for her termination than the "menze"!

So take that "theory" and have it aborted!

The teachers union rep was present, and when apprised of the vile comments made by this bitch, she even stated that the union would not support any member that inflicted such verbal abuse on a 10 year old!

Teachers are paid to teach things like math, science, history, english etc. NOT their personal opinions and bullshit ideologies!

33. oh, I know

It's that really stupid book I refused to read more than one paragraph of in grade 10.

Pretty much my first act of rebellion against authority. Then came the Vietnam demonstrations and smoking pot and eschewing shoes, and once out of high school, telling the dean of women to go to hell and calling the real dean to order at the meeting I called for him to explain why women's res had curfews and men's res had women visitors, the destruction of the Miss Canadian University pageant, the campus strike ...
