Tell us when you go to a range...
I went out shooting today. Fired a semi AK, a FA Reising, 6 rounds (single shot, it's broken) through an MP-40, a Glock 19, a Walther P-38, and a Walther P-99. Total rounds expended: around a thousand, ballpark. Casualties: a bunch of boxes, several sheets of paper, some plastic soda bottles, a few prominent rocks, and one pumpkin. No people were harmed, unless I count when I slammed my thumb in the AK's action (no broken skin, just kinda hurt) or when a casing from the AK hit me upside the head.

So, let us know when you go shooting, and what you shot. I'm curious to see what DUer's shooting habits are. :)

Why brag about this? It just makes visitors think everyone here is obsessed with assault weapons. Don't you have something nicer we could talk about?

What if I already have done my time in the service? I am 40 years old, I don't think they need a 40 year old lance corporal! Hey,you don't like shooting ranges, don't move next to one. Problem solved.

Peace and quiet for all? Car stereo's, Harley davidsons, and airplanes piss me off.

8. RC...
the place we go to shoot is out in the middle of nowhere, and is a dedicated firing range. Regardless of if we shoot or not, there is always the sound of gunfire there, since it's quite a popular facility. Our noise didn't add much to the overal harmonic.

12. Been there, done that, got the bum knee to prove it.
Of course the knee wasnt from the Iraq, I wasnt around for that (I was medicaled just before August of '90). Of course I was in a Latin American country in '88 and '89 (different countries) I hope that counts.

Personally I have little respect for those people that say 'if you like guns join the Army' (yes, that includes certain 4 star retired repub..., err Democrat, generals), I had them before, I have had them since. Guns had jackshit to with going in the Army. Anyone stupid enough to go into the Military simply because they like 'guns' will be in for a rude awakening.

7. This is a thread about the proper and safe use of firearms...
as opposed to other threads routinely posted here about the improper and unsafe use of firearms. If you're not comfortable talking or reading about guns, I must wonder why you're in the "gun dungeon". This would be out of place in the GD or Lounge, but it's appropriate here.

26. You mean not counting my wife and 3 daughters?
If you ever actually made a trip to a shooting range, indoor or out near any major city, you would find a very diverse group; age, ethnically and genderwise.

If you came to one of our once a month training shoots, you would also find from 12 to 20 gay and lesbian folks there from the local Pink Pistols chapter. They are there lot of other times too practicing but at the training shoot they wear their Pink Triangle T-shirts to announce their membership.

Shooting sports are not dominated by the inbred, mouth breath\ing racists as some folks would like you to believe.

Try to be a little more tolerant of groups until you actually know them better. I know that's a tall order for some folks, but we are supposed to be progressive and more tolerant than Republicans, aren't we?

around 25% of the people there were women, and they ALL were shooting.

Do you need links to prominent women shooters?

Here are pics from USA shooting, the folks who put together the US Olympic team...These women are all part of the team...

41. I didn't say you had...
I was referring to other posters who have driven off certain pro-gun female posters here.

Did you see the pics of the US Shooting team? It looks like there's a pretty close to even distribution there between males and females. My wife shoots and has a CCW. My mother shoots sometimes too, as does my mother-in-law. When my daughters get old enough, they'll have that option too. There are lots of resources available for female shooters, and there are lots of female shooters. In fact, the only person in my extended family who doesn't shoot is my sister, because she doesn't have time, and if she needs something shot she calls me.

I don't think that many women hunt. I chalk that up to their having better things to do than wander around in the woods getting their asses frozen off. I don't hunt for the same exact reason.

What makes you think that women don't shoot?

MrBenchley,

The range I go to is run by off-duty sheriff deputies and it is frequented by families that do competition shooting practice, hunters keeping their skills sharp in the off-season, and lots of other people from all walks of life, or so I assume. Everyone is freindly and courteous and beyond that I don't ask if they're in the Klan or if they are RKBA nuts, etc....I don't consider it any of my business. We're all there because we enjoy a common activity.

BTW, I haven't seen you drop the "pantload" bomb yet in this thread. If you choose to respond could you work that in? I've kinda grown fond of that particular expression of yours......

There used to be a regular lounge act put on here between two "enthusiasts."

One would claim to know nothing about guns but JUST HAPPENED to have wandered into a shooting gallery. He was always "surprised" to learn the standard gun nut lies and horseshit, which would then be wallowed in by the rest of the pack.

4. I can go out back now!
I shoot on an irregular basis, I go to a rifle range for my rifle shooting. I usually shoot slow fire, trying for good groups. The range allows rapid fire, and every once and a while I will throw some clay pigeons out on the berm and try to take them out as fast as possible.

I shoot pistol and skeet at home, nothing more relaxing than skeet shooting!

I've got a buddy in upstate New York that can't say no to a new gun. He lives in the same city as my parents so twice a year, I get to shoot new guns. This years highlight, the serbu .50 and a siaga .12 guage shotgun.

Shot a full-auto fal, set up in the 50-63 config. (it is a shame that the US Army of the 50s/60s didnt adopt the FAL, but then because they didnt, we have the AR-15/M-16 and its configuartions).

And a couple of semi-auto Fal kits I finished assembling.

A select-fire M-16 'home-defense' config. (my own configuration, 14.5 light weight barrel (not an m-4, no grenader launcher step down), birdcage, surefire, A1 upper with a OKO site on a long rail.

Not to mention, the .45 (pre WW2 colt), the 590, the m97 trenchgun (noting beats shooting skeet with a shotgun that has a 16in bayo on it), the m9 (aka beretta 92fs)

Also had a friend run by with the Barrett m82, but a 100 yard range (max) isnt enough.

19. I went last Thursday afternoon
Edited on Tue Oct-21-03 12:32 AM by Withergyld
The UPS man brought my "new" Albanian SKS on Tuesday. After I cleaned it up and repaired the stock it was time to shoot it. (It was $89 delivered to my door with a replacement stock)
School was out Thursday and Friday for October Break. My wife was out of town with my daughters so that they could spend time together and do "girl" things.
I took my 10 year old son with me to the range. I also took my Yugo M59/66 SKS, Ruger P95DC, CZ-52, Ruger 10-22 and my Maverick 88 12 guage shotgun.
Before we went I reinforced to my son the rules of safe firearm handling. I started him out with the 10-22. Next after I put 20 rnds through the Albanian SKS, it was his turn. Then we took turns shooting the Yugo SKS, then the Ruger P95. Lastly we shot the CZ-52. We didn't have time to pattern the shotgun as the range was closing.
When we arrived home we again talked about safe firearms handling. We also talked about what to do if one of his friends asked to see my guns and also about what to do if he or one of his friends found a gun or wanted to play with a gun.
We then cleaned all the firearms that we shot. I stripped and cleaned the Albanian SKS and showed him how to do the same with the Yugo SKS. If he is old enough to shoot then he is old enough to help me clean up afterwards.
After the cleaning was done we locked the weapons in the gunsafe and washed up.
Overall 500 to 600 rnds of ammunition were expended. The only casualties were paper targets and the 100 yrd, 200 yrd and 300 yrd gongs.

21. Last trip out
Shot my AR-15 on 100 and 200 yard lines with irons. Shot my AKM (stamped, semi-auto AK) at 100 with irons. Total rounds expended were ~200 each caliber.

Time before that saw my PSS notching the squares out of some bench rest targets at 300 yards. 40 rounds of handload match ammo for the day.

Friday will see me at the range with a 1911 .45 ACP and a Glock 20 10mm for some sidearm fun.

Now if I can just find the time to strap myself to the reloading bench for several hours I can get caught up on the ammo I am going to shoot up Friday.

25. My tribute to WW II
Last weekend I took my Dad and Uncle, both WW II vets, to the range with some of my C&R MilSurp hardware. Two 80 and 82 year old gun nuts etc.

Hardware:
'03A3 Springfield, M-1 Garand, 98K Mauser, Mosin Nagant 91-30, Enfield No. 4 Mk II and of course, the trusty 1911 .45 ACP.

Total rounds fired: 500 - 600

It was the first time since 1945 that my Uncle (USMC, Fleet Marine Force) had shot a Garand. His last "trip to the range" was on Iwo Jima were he was wounded and in a hospital for the duration.

It took him about 5 seconds to remember the mechanics of handling it. By the second enbloc clip he was reloading faster than I can change mags in an AR. He actually got kind of misty handling it.

Great trip for all concerned.

Don P.

34. working on it
my last trip to the range was in late September, while I still had my membership with my old NoVA range. Since then, I've either been too busy, or have had house expenses come up to keep me from paying the $300 membership fee for the only range within 20 miles of my new home in Montgomery County, MD.

The new place closes at 9pm during the week; tho old place was open til 10pm. I don't get home now until close to 8pm, and it's at least 15min to get from home to the range.

During my last trip it was (1) Advantage Arms .22lr kit for my Glock-27, and (2) Sig 239 in .40. Next time it'll probably be the same. Maybe I'll pull the 10-22 out. Who knows.

I did go to the Gaithersburg Gun Show last weekend to do my part to tell the "Monkey County" Council where to stick it. They've been trying to shut down the semi-annual show for the past few years. There is no "gun show loophole" in MD because everyone selling any kind of firearm at a gun show has to have at least a gun show firearms dealer's licence. Handguns and certain scary-looking rifles have a 7-10 day waiting period, so you can't really get one while at a weekend gun show. I went on Sunday, and the vendors outnumbered the visitors! Talk about a dispirited group of vendors. Maybe more people were there on Sat? While there, I did decide that my first shotgun will be the Benelli Nova SP. If I manage the $$$ right, I can still get married in December, get a kayak next spring, honeymoon in May, and then possibly afford the Nova in time for deer season next fall.

Maybe a range trip will be possible next week?

66. since you asked
I mainly go out shooting clays but i havent been in a week or so. All my talk about my AR15 and self defense dont really mean thats what i perfer to shoot. I am a hunter with a belief in the right to self defense. I normally shoot a 12ga or sometimes the 10ga when it comes to practice/fun shooting.

70. I was at the Range last Saturday
I sighted in my AR15. Zero'd the Battle Sight at 300 yards.

Normally I shoot something else..like a 22 LR or an M1 Garand or Lee Enfield.

I didn't shoot more than 50 rounds. Quite pleasant. I especially enjoyed the warmth of the sun, the wind blowing over me, and the faint smell of sage in the air.
