GUNS IN THE NEWS - October 9, 2003
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 11:29 PM by CO Liberal
Since I'm not a moderator, I cannot make rules. But let's try something a little different today, and follow these suggestions for today's GITN thread:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories are welcome in this thread, as well as gun-related editorials.

3 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

4 - In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted to the 'Net within the past 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board.

5 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.

2. Kalashnikov used in gym murder
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/beds/bucks/herts/3174340.stm

The gun used in the drive-by murder of bouncer Dave King was an AK47 Kalashnikov assault rifle.
Hertfordshire Police said at least 25 rounds of armour-piercing ammunition were fired from the powerful battlefield gun, which has not been found.

Mr King, 32, was murdered by masked killers as he left a gym in Brewery Road, close to Hoddesdon town centre, on Friday.

A van and a Mercedes getaway car used by the gunman are being tested by forensic experts.

4. You forgot a part...
gym murder continued:

Criminal fraternity

Hertfordshire Police said that about 50 officers were involved in the investigation into the murder of Mr King, who lived in Stevenage.

Detective Superintendent Steve Read said: "I am appealing to anyone who may have been involved in the disposal of the weapon or anyone who knows the whereabouts of the weapon now.

"I am particularly keen to hear from members of the criminal fraternity.

"Although they may have a high tolerance to the use of firearms, they would probably be shocked at the fact that a weapon designed for battlefield use has been used on a public street in suburban Hertfordshire."

^^^^^^^^^^^ I hope this guy is joking ^^^^^^^^^^^

I really do.

"Bexar County sheriff's deputies are searching for a man in connection with a shooting late Thursday morning at a home on the county's northeast side.
According to deputies, a man went to a home in the 7000 block of Glen Pass at 11 a.m. and started arguing with a woman.
Moments later, another man, who deputies said was armed with a shotgun, tried to stop the argument when the weapon went off."

"MESA, Ariz. - A jury began deliberating Wednesday whether a man convicted of killing a turbaned, bearded Sikh days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks should be sentenced to death.
Jurors recessed without reaching a decision and were to resume deliberations Thursday.
Frank Silva Roque fatally shot Balbir Singh Sodhi, an Indian immigrant, outside Sodhi's gas station on Sept. 15, 2001.
Prosecutors said Roque targeted Sodhi because he believed he was an Arab. "He was no different than the terrorists that attacked New York," prosecutor Vince Imbordino said. "

He turned around and saw that the dog had picked up his gun and was holding it in his mouth, reports Las Ultimas Noticias online.

Mr Poot took himself to the Hospital de la Seguridad Social Federal.

He said: "I don't know how this happened. One minute we were playing and the next he had the gun in his mouth. This dog is my best friend."

It took me three years to train one of my dogs to sit and shake paws. How long did it take to teach this dog THAT trick?

Gun club, residents fire words

Two-sided battle continues

A gun battle is raging in the Town of Rhinebeck. However, this gunfight is being fought with words and lawyers, not bullets.

The Rhinebeck Town Planning Board on Monday continued a public hearing on a site plan review for Northern Dutchess Rod and Gun Club at 140 Enterprise Road in the town. It was also a public hearing on a special use permit for the club.

The Northern Dutchess Rod and Gun Club is seeking approval for modifications made to its shooting range, which includes the placement of seven portable target-throwing devices, installation of five shooting stations, construction of a storage building and observation platform structure, and replacement of specific lighting. The club has already made these enhancements to its range.

BB-gun charges expected today

AUBURN --
The two 12-year-old boys suspected of repeatedly firing a BB gun into a crowded day care playground in Auburn on Monday have been ordered to remain in juvenile detention in Seattle at least until today, when the King County Prosecutor's Office will decide of what crime to formally accuse them.

They are being held on investigation of assault, malicious mischief and malicious harassment, said Dan Donohoe, a spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office.

About 3:30 p.m. Monday, the two boys allegedly began firing a BB gun from a residential back yard into the adjoining play area of Luv-N-Care Day Care Center, part of the Auburn Church of the Nazarene.

Ashwaubenon boy arrested, took gun to school

Teen suspended while incident is investigated

A 16-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday for bringing a gun to Ashwaubenon High School on Tuesday. Authorities were alerted to the gun after school on Tuesday and tried to find the boy at the end of the school day.

A student alerted a school liaison officer, who initiated a search for the boy in school, at his workplace and at his home.

Ashwaubenon Public Safety officers found the boy at home and confronted him about the weapon late Tuesday. Lt. Ken Raupach said the boy initially denied having a gun, but later admitted to bringing the weapon to school.

The gun was a functioning pellet gun that looked like a real firearm.

Yet another "responsible" gun owner.... - Wayne

Woman says boyfriend pulled gun on her

EASTON --
A 23-year-old Bethlehem man was arraigned Wednesday on allegations he pulled a gun on his girlfriend after she went to a club with friends.

Lamar W. Watson, of the 500 block of Clewell Street, was arraigned before District Justice Gay Elwell on charges of harassment, making terroristic threats and reckless endangerment.

Watson's girlfriend, Vanessa Mendez, told police she went to a club Sunday night in Philadelphia with some friends and returned to her home in the 1800 block of Oberly Drive about 5:30 a.m. Monday. Watson was at the home and became angry with Mendez for going out, officials said.

After a verbal argument, Watson pushed Mendez to the ground, pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at her, officials said.

Diverse Group Files Suit In Opposition To Concealed-Gun Law

Lawyers Prepare Arguments Over New Law's Constitutionality

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. --
A St. Louis judge could decide whether Missouri's new concealed-gun law violates the state constitution. But he first must decide whether he -- or a judge in the state's capital city -- has the proper authority to hear the case.

A lawsuit seeking to block the concealed-gun law from taking effect Saturday was filed Wednesday in St. Louis Circuit Court and assigned to Judge Steven Ohmer.

Attorney General Jay Nixon immediately asked that the case be transferred to Cole County, where most lawsuits naming the state as a defendant are tried.

Ohmer began hearing arguments Wednesday but continued the case until Thursday and made no immediate decision on the proper venue for the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims a provision of the Missouri Constitution dating to 1875 prohibits the wearing of concealed firearms.

Colorado Springs Police are searching for clues in the shocking murder of a fast-food employee. Robert Vigil, 35, was riding his bicycle home from work just before midnight Tuesday.

A motorist found his body at the corner of Jetwing and Bainbridge. He had been shot in the head. Lt. Skip Arms of the Colorado Springs Police Department said Vigil had been shot in the head. "We...believe his pockets had been gone through so robbery is a possible motive in this case."

The woman said she was sitting in her car about 9 p.m. at CVS Pharmacy, 5301 Broadway, when two men in another vehicle blocked her car from moving.

A security officer came out of the pharmacy, and the men moved their vehicle, she said. But once the security guard went back inside the building, the men allegedly blocked her vehicle again and forced her into their car at gunpoint.

She said they then drove to an isolated wooded area in Gary and parked, with one of the men continuing to point a gun at her head.

*snip*
She said while her abductor rolled down the car window and was momentarily distracted, she pulled out a handgun she had on her hip.

*snip*
The woman said she started carrying the gun because of the harassment involving her abductor during the past seven months. She said she believes the man was wearing gloves because he intended to kill her and didn't want to leave fingerprints behind.

The good news for RKBA enthusiasts is that thanks to the corrupt gun industry, if he ever gets out, he will be able to walk into any gun show in the state and buy a gun without a background check...unless the gun show loophole gets closed.

21. Store owner killed in robbery
"A robber shot and killed a Jessup deli owner yesterday, grabbed two bags filled with cash, and within minutes began leading police on a high-speed chase through two counties and the city that ended with a car crash, the arrest of one suspect and the shooting of another by a Baltimore County officer, police said.
The victim, Kwang Jun Kim, 53, owner of the Jessup Plaza Deli & Convenience and a Presbyterian church deacon, was shot once in the head about 11:30 a.m. as he was about to walk into his store carrying two bank bags. He was taken to Howard County General Hospital, where he died.
People who knew Kim said he was a hard-working immigrant from South Korea who rose each morning to open his store at 5:30 a.m., and was deeply involved in local church activities. He lived in the 3000 block of Lancelot Cross in Ellicott City and had two children, a son who recently graduated from college and a daughter in high school. "

24. "Man Charged in Wife's Death"
This guy was charged with manslaughter for having a loaded firearm near his depressed wife, after she used it to kill herself - Karan

http://www.thehour.com/279555877579627.bsp

NORWALK -- A Norwalk man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the October 2001 suicide death of his wife in which she shot herself with a gun kept in an unlocked drawer in the couple's bedroom of the Old Belden Hill Road home.

Steven C. Bartush, 36, was taken into custody at his parents home at 12 Inwood Road Tuesday evening and charged with second-degree manslaughter, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Bartush's arrest warrant filed in Norwalk Superior Court Wednesday states that Bartush contributed to the death of his wife, Joan, 32-years old at the time of her death, by being "aware that she was suffering from depression", that "she had suicidal tendencies, that "the guns should have been removed from the house or at the very least locked up" and that "he put the gun she shot herself with in their bedroom drawer the night before Joan Bartush killed herself with it." Upon arrest, Bartush declined to comment to police on the case.

According to the warrant, Joan Bartush had been released from Silver Hill Hospital two days before her suicide where she was being treated for her "escalating depression, bizarre behavior, and threats to kill herself" after an extended period of depression and a suicide attempt on Sept. 12 of 2001.

This poor woman had a history of escalating depression, bizarre behavior, threats to kill herself, an extended period of depression, and a suicide attempt. Allowing her access to a gun with that kind of mental history is downright criminal, IMHO.
