Top cops oppose new gun law

The police chiefs of Lisbon, Lannon and Butler oppose a new state law that would allow most Wisconsin adults to carry concealed firearms.

The bill would also prohibit concealed weapons in airports, jails, prisons and school administration buildings, but allow them in schools, churches and workplaces.

"We don't necessarily need a new law," Bucher said, but he would support it with that exception. He said the statistics from other states, especially Florida, "tend to support" the argument that such laws actually lower crime by making criminals think twice before attacking average citizens who might be carrying guns.

Clarey doesn't think concealed weapons would reduce crime in Wisconsin, one of only six states that ban carrying concealed firearms. "Wisconsin's a very safe state as it is," he said. "I don't want to go back to the days of the wild, wild West," with people settling their disagreements "in a shootout at the mall."
