Typhoon Aere pounds Taiwan, five fishermen feared dead
Floods also destroyed bridges and caused landslides which buried homes in Hsinyi village in the central county of Nantou, trapping some 4,000 residents, according to television reports.

Typhoon Aere - which means 'storm' in the Marshall Islands where it began - is expected to hit the capital Taipei with winds of around 130 kilometres (80 miles) per hour.

As the city braced for a direct hit, the authorities shut down the financial markets, schools and offices. The storm is also expected to strike the cities of Keelung and Hsinchu.

1. Rescue missions continue in Taiwan after deadly mudslides
Nearly 700 people living in remote mountain villages in northern Taiwan were airlifted to safety as continuing bad weather threatened fresh mudslides in the district most affected by Typhoon.

Officials urged people to leave mountainous areas immediately yesterday as heavy rain threatened to trigger more landslides in the north of the country.

The Central Weather Bureau yesterday issued a torrential rain warning for central and southern Taiwan that will be in force until today. The bureau also urged residents of mountainous areas in Hsinchu and Miaoli counties to be on high alert for new mudslides triggered by heavy rain.

Rescue crews were also losing hope yesterday of finding survivors from the mudslide that destroyed more than 20 homes in remote villages in Hsinchu County as Typhoon Aere thrashed the island on Tuesday and Wednesday. The storm killed at least 31 people and several are still missing, disaster officials said.
