PW Botha 'advised right-wingers'

Former state president PW Botha had advised a right-wing coup plotter to leave politics and "get a movement with an iron fist", the Boeremag treason trial heard on Thursday.

Botha told him that white South Africans faced obliteration, plotter turned State witness Lourens du Plessis told the Pretoria High Court.

"I asked him for advice on what we as young people can do to ensure our continued existence. He said to get out of politics and get a movement with an iron fist."

Du Plessis was giving evidence in the trial of 22 alleged members of the right-wing Boeremag organisation charged with plotting to overthrow the African National Congress-led government.

He said he and a friend visited Botha at his home Die Anker at Wilderness in the Western Cape in June 2001 to test his views on the political situation in the country at the time, and to get advice.

Does anyone have detailed links between Cheney and Botha?

PW Botha denies encouraging plot

Former state president PW Botha has rejected a claim that he encouraged a right-wing coup plotter to leave politics and "get a movement with an iron fist".

"When I was state president I always said I was against the use of violence for political purposes," he said from his Wilderness home Die Anker on Thursday.

"That is one of the reasons why I wouldn't let Mandela go."

Earlier in the day plotter turned state witness Lourens du Plessis told the Boeremag treason trial in the Pretoria High Court that he and a friend visited Botha at Die Anker in June 2001.

They were seeking to test his views on the political situation in the country at the time, and to get advice.

The two-hour-long talks were also attended by Botha's wife, Barbara, and the former statesman's financial adviser.

TAU implicated in coup plot - SA
Pretoria - State witness Lourens du Plessis implicated top Transvaal Agricultural Union (TAU) officials in an alleged Boeremag coup plot in the Pretoria High Court on Thursday.

Du Plessis was giving evidence in the trial of 22 alleged members of the rightwing Boeremag organisation charged with plotting to overthrow the government.

Du Plessis said TAU general manager Bennie van Zyl and vice-president Willie Lewies attended a series of meetings held to discuss the coup plot.

He told the court Van Zyl had organised a gathering in Limpopo in mid-2001 where he (Du Plessis) "tested the waters" on a military coup. Also present were Lewies, former defence force group commander Frans Gunther, and Boeremag accused "Rooikoos" du Plessis.

1. Old PW is still around?
I followed all the apartheid back then and thought he would have been targeted for assasination by the ANC.

I was on a ship in the Arabian Gulf a few months ago and the medic was an Afrikaaner. It sounded like 1960s South Africa listening to him castigate all blacks with the most denigrating terms you can imagine.

As I would listen to his off-the-wall rants, inside I was screaming to myself "what a fucking moron!", but as the only american on board an Iranian flagged vessel I thought I better not lambaste him in case I got sick or hurt and needed his medical care. But the point is, as your post indicates, white prejudice towards the endemic population of Africa is very alive and well.

2. What a fucking surprise...
A fascist shithole named Duplessis.

That clan's as bad in South Africa as it was in Quebec.

3. Boeremag plotted to replace Parliament
A parliament had been identified to replace the existing one to have been ousted in a rightwing coup d'état, the Boeremag treason trial heard on Monday.

State witness Lourens du Plessis told the Pretoria High Court he had been informed of the existence of such a body by accused number one Mike du Toit.

"He told me there was a parliament at ground level that could just take over after the coup."
