Mbabane - Nurses in Swaziland on Wednesday resumed a strike which has claimed at least seven lives and sent the public health service into total disarray, following a glitch in their efforts to claim overtime arrears from the state.
Masitsela Mhlanga, president of the Swaziland Nurses Association (SNA), said that the renewed action followed the failure of the government to clear dues dating back to 2001.
"Following the failure of government to pay some of our members and short-paying others we have resolved not to return to the wards until they pay us in full, so our strike action is on," Mhlanga said.
He said 144 of the estimated 900 nurses waiting to receive their arrears in the tiny southern African kingdom had not been paid so far.
