Administration Sen. Robert Z. Barbers yesterday warned various groups critical to the eight-hour visit of US President George W. Bush to the Philippines on Oct. 18 "not to make any untoward incident that may further create a perception of growing instability in the country."
"I hope that some sectors of our society will be more civil and urbane in their manifestation of protest regarding the short visit of Bush to the country," Barbers said.
The former Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary during the Ramos administration made the appeal amid increasing preparations of the government such as tightening security and intensifying the beautification of Metro Manila.
This, according to Barbers, is in contrast to some sectors organizing rallies to show their protest in anticipation of the arrival next week of the leader of the world's most powerful nation.
"I know that our people are already exhausted with all the controversial issues rocking the nation that have resulted in a negative perception of our country. And as a consequence, our economic programs, in order to bounce back and be competitive with our Asian neighbors, are being hampered," he said.
