Lagos - Nigerian prison workers have threatened to go on strike this month to demand back pay and benefits and better conditions in jails, officials said on Thursday.
In a letter to President Olusegun Obasanjo dated last month and confirmed by presidency officials on Thursday, the workers said the strike will commence on October 15, unless the government meets their demands.
"All junior officers from the rank of chief inspector to prison assistant will down tools throughout the federation," they said.
The workers are demanding payment of 2001 and 2002 rent allowances, better promotion opportunities and improvement in the conditions of inmates.
"They are frustrated over a series of problems which centre on welfare and conditions of prisoners," the officials said.
