Water into fuel?

...His machine could actually make saltwater burn.

John Kanzius discovered that his radio frequency generator could release the oxygen and hydrogen from saltwater and create an incredibly intense flame.

"Just like that. If that was in a car cylinder you could see the amount of fire that would be in the cylinder."

The APV Company Laboratory in Akron has checked out John's amazing invention. They were amazed...

2. I think it is called Alchemy.
Even Issac Newton dabbled in Alchemy and he was not successful either.

3. no, it's not alchemy. Nothing like it.
And you imply that the inventor wasn't successful. According to the report he was. Whether it's an efficient or practical method of energy generation is another matter. But unless someone is lying it looks like he's burning salt water.

5. There is a serious thermodynamic problem, however
And that problem is this: you must expend at least as much energy to split the water molecules as you get by burning them back into water. So, you aren't ever going to use this system to actually use water as an onboard motor fuel. It's thermodynamically unworkable.

However, if this is an efficient way of splitting water, it might represent a useful way of producing H2, to be used elsewhere. Big if. And then there's the issue of what H2 is really good for. I happen to think pure H2 is a terrible choice of motor fuel, although it could be used as feedstock for manufacturing other motor fuels. Or other industrial chemical processes.

6. Simple solution to thermodynamic problem.
Can't we just get * to add a signing statement allowing us to disregard the laws of thermodynamics when we want to?:P

8. that was my understanding too.
I want Telsa's car. Well, I want the Bush administration to drive around in Tesla's car for at least 10 years, then get a health check. If they aren't loaded with tumors or blind and impotent then I want the car.

Some day, out in my garage (leaning and swaying in the wind right now) I'm going to demonstrate how those thermodynamic laws are actually just limitations of the current paradigm. I'll be on the news showing my invention made of 2x4's and duct tape and you'll think I'm just nuts.

9. Yet another way to convert large amounts of electrical energy to H2.
We already know how to do that, thank you.
