School district buses turn to biofuel (FL)

Next month, cafeterias won't be the only place St. Lucie County kids smell French fries.

The St. Lucie County School District is considering running all of its 400 buses as early as May on biodiesel, an alternative fuel derived from domestic products considered more environmentally friendly than traditional diesel.

Types of the fuel, which is made domestically and contains no petroleum, can leave a fried food smell in a vehicle's wake.

"What we are looking at now, and where we want to be, is totally into biodiesel," said Karen Williams, St. Lucie County school transportation director. "It will help with emissions and hopefully we are looking at a lower cost."
