PNG health officials say up until 10 years ago, malaria was unheard of in the Papua New Guinea highlands because mosquitoes could not breed in the cool climate. But currently, the PNG highlands are experiencing an outbreak of malarial diseases.
The recent outbreak in the Eastern Highlands has been blamed on global warming.
Eastern Highlands politician, Dr Banare Bun, says it is getting warmer in the highlands and mosquitos are breeding easily and people are getting infected.
''The climate is contributing to it. Now we are getting warmer climes up in the highlands and it is because of the world global warming. And so mosquitoes can survive there and breed," he says.
