Japan, US eye emission-free coal plant

Sun Apr 22, 2:10 AM ET

TOKYO (AFP) - Japan and the United States will lead a
five-nation project to develop a coal-fired power plant
which discharges no carbon dioxide into the air, a press
report said Sunday.

The five nations, including China, India and South Korea,
are expected to sign a deal this year on technological
cooperation for the project, the leading business daily
Nikkei said quoting Japanese government sources.

The new plant will cut carbon dioxide emissions by some
20 percent from the level of conventional models by
gasifying coal with oxygen before burning it.

Then the carbon dioxide generated at the plant will be
liquefied and locked in an underground storage facility,
the report said.

1. So the "green coal" initiative is finally going to bear fruit.
One bloody plant. That reduces emissions by 20 whole percent!

2. How many nations does it take to implement a greenwashing project?
Apparently, "five."

3. "liquefied and locked in an underground storage facility'...until it escapes. Which it will.

One way or another.

ETA: A great quote from this post by newcomer Shoelace: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x728057

Slogan most likely to sweep the nation: "Coal is the enemy of the human race."
