EPA - US GHG Emissions Up 16% 1990 - 2005 - Boston Globe
USA!! USA!! USA!!

WASHINGTON -- Emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the United States increased more than 16 percent from 1990 to 2005, including a spike in carbon dioxide emissions from cars, trucks, and coal plants, according to a US Environmental Protection Agency draft report released yesterday.

The report found that greenhouse gas emissions went up by 0.8 percent in 2005 over the previous year, which US officials noted was slightly lower than the average annual growth of such emissions over that 15-year period. But at least one environmentalist said the data underscore the continuing dangers of increasing greenhouse gas emissions, which scientists say contribute to global warming.

"It's further evidence that shows our global warming emissions are increasing when we need to follow the opposite trend in reducing our emissions to avoid dangerous climate change," said Steve Clemmer , research director for the Clean Energy Program at the Cambridge-based Union of Concerned Scientists .

Clemmer noted that some scientists have called for an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2050; if those emissions increase, he said, "it's going to make our job that much more difficult in the future." After seeking 30 days of public comment, the EPA report will be submitted in April to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change , along with reports from other nations. The UN helps coordinate intergovernmental responses to climate change.
