Scientists must 'put their minds to it today,' he says of removing emissions

LONDON - British tycoon Sir Richard Branson on Friday announced a $25 million prize for a way to extract a billion tons or more of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year.

The Virgin Group chairman was joined by former Vice President Al Gore and other leading environmentalists as he announced the Virgin Earth Challenge prize.

Branson compared it to the competition launched in 1675 to devise a method of estimating longitude accurately. It was 60 years before English clock maker John Harrison discovered an accurate method and received his prize from King George III.

"The Earth cannot wait 60 years. We need everybody capable of discovering an answer to put their minds to it today," Branson said.

Gore said the planet had a "fever" that had to be taken seriously.

4. Interesting picture
I'm sure that's what King George III was doing when he paid for a more efficient way of conducting imperial policy.

I'm not saying Branson is out for world domination, it's just an interesting picture, depending on how you look at it.

Plus Jesus is standing next to him. Wait, no, that's not the 2nd Coming, that's just Al Gore. I'm getting those two mixed up lately.

6. good on Branson - Bush won't fund research in Carbon Sequestration
and we can't wait for trees to grow even though we sure should be planting them by the billions.

You gotta give the guy credit for putting his $ where his mouth is.
Few there are these days who walk their talk.

With the Petroleum industry behind Bushco until Hell freezes over, little or no dollars are going into carbon capture research. Good on Branson! :loveya:
