Global Warming Myths & Lies - GREAT Reference List, With Sourcing
EDIT

1. Mars is undergoing global warming, therefore humans can not be causing it on Earth.

No. Mars is not undergoing global warming. The Mars Global Surveyor detected a decrease in the mass of the South Polar Cap between 1999 and 2005. First, this is a regional (not global) warming localized to the south pole of mars. There is no similar data for any corresponding temperature change at either the north pole or any other part of Mars. Secondly, since a Martian year is 687 days, this represents only 3 data points, which does not equate to the long-term trend we see on Earth. (Indeed, we see dramatic peaks and valleys in the yearly temperature data on Earth.) Lastly, research has shown that Mars’ climate is far more volatile than our own, and is quite sensitive to changes in dust storm activity and orbital variations. If most of the planets and moons in the solar system were exhibiting warming trends, that would be a valid point for argument.

2. Volcanoes release much more carbon dioxide than humans.

No. Volcanic activity is 0.02 to 0.05 Giga-tons/year. Humans produce 8 Gt/yr (and climbing). Volcanoes elicit a far more dominating cooling effect due to atmospheric dispersal of particulates and sulfur dioxide. In addition, there has been no recent increase in volcanic activity – and the volcanic activity we have seen has actually slowed global warming.

3. The Earth (and its carbon cycle) is too big for humans to affect it.

While the Earth exchanges a great deal of carbon between the ocean, atmosphere, soil, and biosphere, it is the net balance which is of greatest concern to us. Without human influence, this regulatory process produces a net carbon increase of 0.0 Gt/year. During 1850-2000, through a combination of fossil fuel burning, cement manufacturing, and land-use changes, humans added a net 174 Gt of carbon. This caused the majority of an increase from 288 ppm (parts per million) to 369.5 ppm of CO2. As mentioned above, we currently add 8 Gt/year to the atmosphere.

4. The sea level has not changed.

Yes, it has. Since 1900, sea level has risen by about 35 cm (13.8 inches). This change in sea level is accelerating.

2. A quick question about point 1...
Point 1 states that Mars is not undergoing global warming, but the information that follows basically says (as I read it) that there's not nearly enough data to tell what's happening on Mars. Am I reading this wrong?

I've heard the "Mars argument" several times lately, and I just want to be sure I have the facts is before trying to refute it.

3. Planet of the Schlemazels
Yes, it is happening, it has been reported on in reputable sources (popularly at space.com), and a few points need to be addressed.

The first is that nobody ever claimed that 100% of terrestrial warming is anthropogenic -- in fact, "anthropogenic" is the term of art to describe human-caused global warming, and is abbreviated as "AGW". Evidence suggests that the Earth is, and has been, in an unusually warm era for approximately 10 to 13 thousand years.

There are some reputable critics of AGW, but they're easy to identify, because they base their arguments on evidence, not ideology. But these critics are few and rare, since the evidence in support of AGW is strong. And I'll emphasize that I do mean "AGW", anthropogenic global warming.

The next point is the biggest in scope, but it's ironically trivial: planetary warming throughout the Solar system may be caused by changes in solar output, infalling cosmic dust encountered in our passage through a dusty part of the galaxy's spiral arms, or even some presently undiscovered phenomenon. Until we start building factories on other planets, no one is likely to politicize the phenomenon. And, of course, the Earth's climate itself is known to have cycles of activity, and as they become known well-enough to predict the weather by, they will be popularized, like the ENSO, or El Niño Southern Oscillation.

But if the Earth is, in fact, experiencing a certain amount of non-anthropogenic warming, does it make sense that we should we pile more kindling on that fire?

One example I like to use is from kids' cartoons and Yiddish minstrelsy. The characters of the schlemiel and the schlemazel are favorites in most minstrel comedy. The schlemiel is the trouble-making clown, and the schlemazel is the fall guy. In Tom and Jerry cartoons, Jerry (the mouse) is the schlemiel and Tom (the cat) is the schlemazel. Mr. Jinx, the Warner bulldog, and the unhip-looking actor representing the PC in Apple's new ads are other schlemazels.

In cartoons, the schlemiel leads the schlemazel into a dark closet or shed; the schlemazel then strikes a match, and in the light, he (and the audience) can plainly see that the place is stuffed with barrels of TNT, sticks of dynamite, jugs of nitroglycerine, etc. -- immediately followed by a massive explosion.

Clearly, the AGW "skeptics" are the schlemiels; and if we fail to see through their deceits, we will be the schlemazels. Then, a closet full of dynamite will look pretty mild in comparison.

4. YOU ROCK HATRACK!!
I joined this forum about 3 weeks ago after trying mightily to address these same queries that are many times accepted as fact on many forum discussions (thanks to the input of the Exxon PR Astroturfers).
I've watched your posts for some time now and have to say that you are spot on in all your observations.

Hehe, I figure it this way, between Shoelace and Hatrack, we can cover everything in between eh friend and fellow cohort in getting the truth out there where it belongs?;-)

As a 20+ year observer, worker, reporter on earth events and much more, I salute you Hatrack. Just want you to know how much you are appreciated and from one who reads the papers, studies the science, the truth is here for us to embrace, since all of life depends on the dissemination of this information now and our ability to act on it with the greatest, collective wisdom, knowledge ever.

You absolutely ...
