Kerry: Bush drilling in Alaska, "end this 'drill today, pay tomorrow' mentality"
Kerry on the Bush Drilling for Oil in Bristol Bay

“With a Mideast oil supply increasingly unsteady, this administration’s failed playbook is to build a new oil rig and pave over our dwindling natural resources. Eight weeks ago Americans demanded change on the environment and relief at the gas pump, but there’s no change in Washington if the Administration just sells off Alaska’s frontier to the big oil companies. We need to end this ‘drill today, pay tomorrow’ mentality, and instead make the tough choices to declare our energy independence.”

1. Clarify
I admit I don't really get it. If Americans want relief at the gas pump, and also less dependence on mid-east oil, then why not drill in Alaska? From what I've read, we're talking about a tiny little fraction of frozen tundra up there.

3. Read more
Estimated 6 month supply there. It won't affect anything. Likely that some of it will even get exported.

It is a hoax, as is the case with any repuke policy.

4. couple of reasons...
first, it will take 20 years to get the pumps up and running.
second, it will add 1% to our oil totals
third, it will decimate one of the few remaining pristine areas of the US
fourth, the tundra has been melting at an alarming rate - means the ground will be too soft to build any roads, etc. Most of the big oil co's have said it's not economically feasible.

I'm really not worried about it actually happening. Even if it passes into law, there's no way logistically that they could pull it off.

6. Go ahead and drill if it will free us even a little bit from the bloodsuckers in the mideast........
If we continue the way we are only those that can "afford" it will be able to drive cars and heat their homes is that what you want? Drill damn it Drill. Yes I know that the profits are going to big oil, but my god, how stupid do we have to be not to use our resources.

8. Talk about short-sighted.
> If we continue the way we are only those that can "afford" it will be
> able to drive cars and heat their homes is that what you want?

And you think that drilling a few percent of the current US oil demand
will change this how?

> Drill damn it Drill.

:eyes:

> Yes I know that the profits are going to big oil,

In that case why not use your time & energy in getting a rebate from
big oil (hint: taxes, royalties) instead of willingly paying even more
to them for the sake of your car habit? Why not work on your efficiency
and make the existing stuff go further? Why not insulate your home more,
replace your standard bulbs with CFLs, reduce your wastage?

> but my god, how stupid do we have to be not to use our resources.

Ever hear the idea of "saving for a rainy day"?
There will come a time - in the near future - when even that few percent
of the current US oil demand will be necessary. That time isn't here yet.
If you drill now, just for convenience, for the sake of saving a dollar,
then it will not BE there when it becomes literally a matter of life and
death. You need to get real before you burn up the last of your fuel.
