The mercury climbed to 69 degrees in Boston and 66 degrees in Worcester, shattering previous records in the cities of 62 degrees and 57 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Taunton. The high temperature in Bedford hit 70.

"It was wonderful. ... Since there was no snow we decided to water ski instead," Hudson's Sheryl Wharff said after swishing atop Lake Boon in Hudson with her family. Just days earlier they skied on snow in New Hampshire. "We have now (water) skied every month except the month of February," Wharff said.

Kimberly Buttrick, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, said the warm weather in New England is largely due to El Nino, a cyclical weather pattern that warms ocean waters in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and changes the jet stream's global pattern.

The jet stream is now aloft, meaning warm air from the south is coming to this area. When the jet stream is lower - as it is expected to be Tuesday and Wednesday - colder air from Canada will come down, she said.

Colorado has had more than twice their average snowfall this year, I believe. Here in Boston, where I went bike-riding with my kid this morning, we've actually had several years of record snowfalll in the last decade.
