Considering the fact that a nuclear plant houses more than a thousand times the radiation
as released in an atomic bomb blast, the magnitude of a single attack could reach beyond 100,000 deaths and the immediate loss of tens of billions of dollars. The land and properties destroyed (your insurance won't cover nuclear disasters) would remain useless for decades and would become a stark monument reminding the world of the terrorists' ideology. With more than 100 reactors in the United States alone, if one is successfully destroyed, just threatening additional attacks could instill the sort of high impact terror which is being sought by a new breed of terrorists.

2. As in Chernobyl?
Edited on Mon Nov-20-06 09:49 PM by NNadir
Nearly the entire radioactive inventory of the large power reactor at Chernobyl was released into the environment under conditions of extreme volatilization (a graphite fire that burned for weeks.) The fire occurred at the end of the fuel cycle, precisely when the reactors radioactivity was highest.

Your contention is what exactly? Are you claiming that 100,000 people died at Chernobyl? Where, exactly, are the bodies?

If you must discuss, like Dick Cheney and George Bush continuously do, the threat of terrorism, I remind you that the two largest terrorist acts committed on US soil involved fossil fuel, in Oklahoma diesel fuel and at the World Trade Center - an event motivated by oil politics - jet fuel.

Is there some very special reason that you elevate what allegedly could happen over what has happened?

Are you calling, as I am, for the banning of petroleum? If so, welcome to the club.

Hundreds of millions of people have been killed by air pollution in the last 25 years. Is there a very, very, very, very special reason that these lives that have been lost are more special than the lives you say could be lost?

Inquiring minds want to know.
