A pleasant (if small) note in the horrible chorus of environmental news

Possible griz sighting in Colorado(!!)

(snip)
A few days ago some hunters in the San Isabel National Forest (center of the state in the mountains west of Colorado Springs) claim to have spied a sow grizzly with two cubs. As the hunters claimed to have experience with the griz and black bears, the Colorado Dept. of Wildlife has deemed their report to be credible — credible enough to get in there and look for physical evidence.

If confirmed this would be major, major news. The last known grizzly in Colorado was shot in 1979 in the San Juan mountains of southern Colorado. The search for grizzlies in Colorado has taken on near-mythic dimensions, with sightings popping up from time to time only to enter into grizzly lore, unconfirmed. If you have never heard of Rick Bass, his excellent book The Lost Grizzlies is about searching for grizzlies in the San Juans and is well, well worth the read.
