Summer 'second-warmest'
OTTAWA — Yes, it was hot. Environment Canada says the summer of 2006 was the second-warmest since national record-keeping began in 1948.

Average temperatures were 1.4 degrees above normal during June, July and August, continuing a warming trend which has been evident every season but two over the past nine years.

The hottest year — and summer — on record was 1998.

The trend is consistent with computer projections of what will happen under climate change, says Environment Canada scientist Bob Whitewood.

1. I believe it. Oregon has been way too hot this year, and
almost no rain.

the grass is all burned brown, and the blackberries are shriveling on the bushes. :(

3. Further
From the article.

Warming is most pronounced in the North because of what scientists call a positive feedback loop: as reflective ice and snow melt, less heat is bounced into space and more is absorbed by water and land.

The result appears to be exponential. Such that as things change, the changes add to further changes.

So it looks to me that some of my friends that say they don't have to worry about climate change in their liftime are simply asking for an early end to their lifetime.

2. In Washington State, we had a fairly mild summer. But...
We had only one hot patch where the temperatures were in the 90s, back in late June and early July. Other than that the temperatures have been around normal to a tad above normal, with Seattle mostly in the upper 70s to low 80s.

However, this has been the driest summer on record. While we have started to get a bit of rain, long range forecasts show a very dry winter, which probably means yet another spring and summer of water shortages in western Washington due to the lack of snowfall in the Cascades (ie no "seasonal resevoir.") If that is the case, it will be the third time in the last five years.

6. And?
Your reference is to U.S. national record-keeping, but the article refers to Canadian national weather records.

I found some information that expounded on what was posted.
Did I do something wrong?

9. CNS News doesn't have a very good reputation around here
It's not merely a conservative news outlet; it tends to salt its output with out-and-out crank journalism.

There's a number of disreptuable news sources, including Jeff Rense, Executive Intelligence Review, etc. The best rule to follow is, that if you see something of interest on a wacky website, find out if it comes from a legit news source, and link to that one. Rense is especially notorious for mixing high-quality news with absolute moonbat dreck.

As JFK said long before RWR, "trust, but verify".

10. I looked through this one carefully...
and there are prominent articles and/or op eds from the likes of Michelle Malkin and other RW dreg. :puke:

Funny that the poster would be so familiar with the site as to cite it, even about some "technical" issue.

11. Funny...
That you accepted the line "Environment Canada says the summer of 2006 was the second-warmest since national record-keeping began in 1948." without trying to determine if there was other information from other sources that go back further in time.

Record keeping began in the United States years earlier, thus we have more information on warmer summers.
When you researched warmer summers in the United States did you find the comments about that summer in the 20's was a lie?
What were the actual temperatures during that summer in question?
Why would you be angry because about the source of the information without trying to determine if it was accurate?

Are you angry that I continued to source the statement, or that I found information that contradicted what was posted?

First, no one is angry. Nice to see your willing to play the "angry liberal" card though. I wonder where you picked that up? :eyes:

Second, if if it is accurate it doesn't contradict anything. The OP refers to Canadaian summers. Your post to D.C.

Go along now. There's some creatures under the bridges that need company.

13. Creatures under bridges?
Angry liberal card?

The charts you posted don't go back to the 20's... which were the period alluded to in my earlier post about a warmer summer.
You "creatures" comment seems to show some frustration with the facts I presented while your followup post doesn't address
the matter at hand.

Why have you chosen a "kill the messenger" approach simply because I've presented alternate information?
I don't know if you're a liberal or a Democrat but why would political affiliation have to do with weather records?

14. They don't....???
Edited on Thu Sep-14-06 03:34 PM by Viking12
You mean that chart of Mean Global Average Surface temp from NASA GISS that is labeled on the x-axis 1880-2005 doesn't go back to the 20s? 1880 comes after 1920, right? Perhaps in the CNSNews reality it doesn't.

MMM, let's see.... You're posting on a site that is for Democrats and liberals and you don't know my political affiliation? Why would you imply that earlier posters were angry when there is clearly no anger represented in their posts?

Here's a picture of a creatures that lives under a bridge.

15. Partisan
So if a fact comes from a source that you don't agree with you disregard the fact and attack the messenger.

U.S. HAS SECOND WARMEST SUMMER ON RECORD
Nation Experienced Warmest January - August Period On Record

Sept. 14, 2006 — Summer 2006 was the second warmest June-to-August period in the continental U.S. since records began in 1895, according to scientists at the NOAA National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. Additionally, the 2006 January-to-August period was the warmest on record for the continental U.S. Above-average rainfall last month in the central and southwestern U.S. improved drought conditions in some areas, but moderate-to-extreme drought continued to affect 40 percent of the country. (Click NOAA image for larger view of June-August 2006 statewide temperature rankings. Please credit “NOAA.”)

If you spend your life attacking facts that don't meet with your agenda not only do you stop growing, but you become small.

I don't understand your fascination with trolls but you keep bringing them up so they must have some significance that only you understand.

There is a difference between Democrats and Liberals. Liberals are a little more hard core in their beliefs and they are scaring some of the regular Democrats from their ranks.
The "all or nothing at all" mindset that seems to permeate our party could leave us on the outside looking again...

16. Let's try one more time ...
Drop the "Liberal vs Democrat" strawman.
Drop the troll references.
Drop the dispute over source publication.
Stick to the facts.

The original post was about the temperature in Canada.
You responded to it with a post using Washington DC temperatures,
apparently as some sort of contrary position to the OP.

The squabbling since then seems to have obscured the fact that
Washington DC temperatures have buggerall to do with the Canadian
temperatures.

Hope this helps! :hi:

17. Thank You!
I understand the point made.
My point was that you can't get a fair assessment when one area has 100 plus years of record keeping while another has only 60 years
