3. The bottom three maps, are they describing temperature variation?
I can't quite make the captions out on them.

If so, then we're seeing some truly amazing extremes so far this year. Horrible areas of red AND a lot of blue. This is not good, and to think it's only just beginning to accelerate.

5. Yes, exactly so
What's harder for me to read are the maps - they tend to get a bit behind the temperature graphics.

What's clear, though, are two very large high-temp anomalies SW of Greenland and in and around Svalbard present in prior years, but strikingly strong in 2006.

There are also some low-temp anomalies apparently over northern Siberia, though they don't seem to be much more than 1C in scale - as opposed to the Svalbard anomaly, which is almost off the temp scale given next to the map.
