Howard - Australians Must Recycle More Water

Prime Minister John Howard has outlined his vision for more water recycling in Australia, but says he does not think the issue needs to go to a referendum.

As climate change alters rainfall patterns in Australia, governments are resorting to strategies like recycling and desalination to shore up water supplies.

Mr Howard said Australia desperately needed to recycle more water, but reuse programs needed to be tailored to individual communities.

"We need in this country a lot more recycling of water," he said. "We need to have more aggressive policies to capture stormwater. And we need to understand there is no one, simple, fits-all, silver bullet solution to the problem of water supply. It needs to be tackled according to the needs and capacities of individual areas."
