FEDERAL Labor Party plan released yesterday could devastate the Collie coal industry.
The national greenhouse gas emissions trading scheme taxes power sources such as coal fired power stations and could result in a 28 per cent reduction in coal use in Australia.
Western Australian Premier Alan Carpenter said he would not commit the State to any form of emissions trading until there was more evidence that WA interests would not be adversely affected. He said he would want assurances that any trading scheme would not adversely impact the State's capacity to rely on energy sources such as coal.
Collie-Wellington MLA Mick Murray said he welcomed and was reassured by the Premier's comments made in Parliament yesterday. "This is a positive step for the coal industry," Mr Murray said. "It certainly takes away pressures for the coal industry. We are happy with the outcome.
EDIT
Mr Carpenter said WA was already playing its part on the global stage to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through its natural resources. "As one of the world's largest producers of liquefied natural gas, WA is exporting its clean, greenhouse-friendly fuel to some of the world's largest greenhouse-emitting nations," he said. "This government is also strongly committed to growing the renewable energy sector. "We are actively promoting ways to get more renewable energy into the South West Interconnected Grid."
